Master cylinder to firewall gasket?

I bought a new MC for the Dart, no firewall gasket came with it. Does the gasket do anything besides protect the paint? What issues may I get into if I don't install one?

It was only a piece of foam sheet material. You probably have a substitute in packaging materials laying around the house.

Not to protect paint but to keep wind noise, water and dirt from entering through the firewall. You can buy material from most hardware and automotive stores to fab a gasket. Pretty cheap.

I wish I'd seen DMT, but will keep it bookmarked for paint day. I just used engine gasket silicone.
