Do the harmonic balancers play into the balancing of the mid 70's 360's, I realize the 318 and 340's are internaly balanced and the 360 is externaly balanced via the flywheel but what I don't know is if the harmonic balancer weighs into that equation or not. Is the balancer for the 360 also an external source of balancing for the 360 like the flywheel is? Anybody know???

Yes the balancer is part of the balanceing the engine. The flywheel doesn't have any weights on it but the converter does.

So the harmonic balancers are not interchangable thoughout the small blocks? I am aware they use weights on the torque converters as opposed to the holes drilled in the flywheel. I guess what I am getting at is, Is the harmonic "balanced" to the 360 and only usable on a 360 or could a person use the 360's harmonic on a 318 or a 318's harmonic on a 360? And are the harmonic balancers from the magnum engines different from the LA engines alltogether? My concern is due to the possibillity of picking up an sfi balancer (used) for my mid 70's 360 and I want to be sure I am getting one that is compatible to my engine.

You should mention if the motor you are dealing with is a automatic or standard tranny motor,as the manual flywheel is drilled to offset the most of the balancing. This results in a less cut up balancer, with a outer ring that looks like half of it is missing. This only applys to manual 360,s,which are few.Mrmopartech

Think I found my answer at the fluiddampner site, they list same dampner for all A/LA engines. http://www.fluidampr.com/chrysler.htm

Although the fact they say internaly balanced bothers me because I understand the 360 to be externaly balanced?

so i need a different harmonic balancer for my 360 because it now has a 4 speed behind it?

who makes a suitable balancer? i've not seen any reference to balancers for stick shifts in aftermarket parts catalogs

Check out professional products .com as they have a balancer that you can add and remove weight from. This way you only buy one balancer and can put it on all small block engines.

The 360 harmonic balancer is not specific to whether you have an auto or manual tranny. As long as it's for a 360 built prior to 93 you are good to go whether it came from an engine with an auto or manual tranny.

You can't use the balancer from an internal balance engine like a 318 or 340 unless you want to spend so serious bucks adding mallory metal to the crank to make it an internal balance engine.

The 360 flywheel is drilled on the back side for the proper balance. Again as long as it's one for a 360 prior to 93. You can't use a flywheel from a 318, 340 for the same reasons as you can't for the harmonic balancer. But if you get one of the mopar engine books they usually have a template that shows you where to drill the 318, 340 flywheel so you can make it usable on a 360 just like they will show you where to weld the weights on the torque converter.

The 93 and up magnum 5.9 (360) engines have a different balance than the LA 360 through 92.

Well I am looking into picking up a Fluid dampner for the 360 but am still not sure whether the one I am trying to get will work on my 360 or not. Guess I will have to wait an see if he gets me a picture of the darned thing.
