Mini or no mini

You don't need, but you will be glad you got one.
The mini starter has made the big old heavy starters obsolete to me. I have a can full of the old heavy. lol
 
For me there is no downside and only upside for mini vs would field starters

Less current, smaller, so far as I know they crank big engines just fine

I followed 318's advise although he says I never do... I went to the Pick-n-Pull and pulled a... well not pulled I should say found it on the ground under the truck starter from a late 90s Dodge truck. I paid $22 for it. I took it home and sprayed it with WD-40 and wiped it off with paper towels. I repeat that two more times until the paper towels couldn't get anything more off of it and it looked brand new. It by far has been the best starter I've had on the Duster....
the factory ones are made different than the parts store ones I believe and I've never changed one on any of my Magnum durangos or ram truck...
 
Mini are totally worth it.. cheap, easy to get almost anywhere.
 
I’d run the mini regardless of whether it was cheap, equal in cost or cost twice as much, who cares. Less weight, impressive cranking and is easy to change out. And you’re less likely to scratch the header tubes all up replacing it if needed vs the big heavy version
 
Mini starter all the way. I got mine from the junkyard. I didnt even need to hit the yard and use my tools. Owner told name to check the shelves. I found one with a remanned tag on it that looked fresh and clean for $20. We checked it with a battery and jumper cables. From what I have read, the only thing besides worn out motor brushes that goes wrong with these Denso mini starters is the solenoid contactor. All easy fixes.

The OEM " big dog" gear reduction starters are 1.6, and 1.8 hp. This was cutting edge and they were actually concidered light in weight at one time. These are fine for a full on exacting restoration, however time marches on. These little 8lb power houses put out 2.25 hp and can be found on every magnum V8 and V6 truck or van in the junkyard. They are so dirt cheap, because they are everywhere.

Another plus is the location of the studs for the wiring is in the same location as the stock starter so no wiring mods or wire relocation is needed to run a mini denso. I actually have 3 of em now. Got another one for my kids car from the same junkyard, and got a spare from a dodge dakota with a V6 that I bought for the transmission.

I run the mini on all of my vehicles, they are lighter & crank a lot faster than the heavy clunky old starters.
 
the only place i ever found one not to be better, is with a 340 exhaust manifold, and the first generation mini starter. had to strip all the heat shielding off to get in to fit
 
My eyes dodged a bullet....I thought Kim wanted info on buying a mini skirt....whew!
 
mini makes life easier when changing . i use the old big starter cause it still works and i like the sound it makes starting
 
I like the manly sound of a real Mopar starter, too. But my race car gets a (gulp) Toyota 22R starter because that's what fits the race bellhousing.
