mini starter off v6 mag nose cone mod ?

I use a 95 Ram 2500 as the model. No changes needed on a 360, a 400, or a 440. Bolts right on.

It's all good, now we all know 96' has to be modified on stock three speed trans bell housing/360, but after mod ... It WILL work and work great. Been everywhere in it today. It's nice to be able to turn the car off and start it back up again 10,20,30,40 even a hr later without letting big starter to cool from headers
 
I got apiece of wood burning stove flu metal, " heat resistant" I'm using for a head shield. Saved a lot of this $$$$ , all kinds of ways to make it look nice, and save ton of money

Fact: 96' Dodge Dakota SLT v6 Magnum / Mini Starter, will NOT fit stock 72 Duster trans housing unit, without two mods done to it. Period.

I believe 95 and older are the starters that bolt right in. I have put 3 of those in without any grinding

Well, I just did it. And guess what, it didn't fit your more than welcome to review my steps and pics I took and see for your self
 
Better yet I think your both high. You think I wanted to spend my day grinding a starter lmao here you go.... This is how far off the cone was...

Go take your starter off. And show me, like I'm showing you. You want me to do it all over again, but make a film ? I documented everything. My Duster, my family, know one else has ever owned it. I got the receipt from 72 and a spare bedroom full of parts, if I tell you it dosent, it dosent fit without nose job

Dang dude, relax.

The part number for the Dakota starters changed in '96. '92-'95 is a completely different part number (and is the same for v6 and V8's). So it could be the earlier ones fit just fine, you don't know. On top of that it's also worth noting that it could be a problem unique to your 3 speed bellhousing, because I bet most of the other folks have 4 speeds or auto's, and they're not the same. And finally, it could just be the pocket for the nose of the starter on your bellhousing just didn't get cast deep enough and others did, because crap happens.

So, thanks for sharing your experience, maybe it will help someone else that runs into that particular problem. But it doesn't mean other people haven't bolted them straight on with no mods.
 
I agree with above - David, what you did is cool and a great resource for someone who runs into the same issue - don't go turning this thread into a pissing contest over which mini starter does/fits what. You can now confidently say that some mini's need to be modified and you know exactly how to do it. ~it's all good :thumbsup:

that's all well and good - but it's $105 w/o a core - Dave took one out of a truck that I think he had just sitting around and, in a few hours with some patient work, he had a running car. Now we know one can be sourced out of a 97 & newer and be made it work - necessity is the mother of invention.
 
So for something that could have been purchased new, bolt on, for $75. Was this worth the labor? if so then great, you saved some dough!
 
I just thought that this was a very useful list for the next time that I go to the local Pull-a-Part to replace my dragging starter on my 65 273, and it might be useful for everybody.

Wow, I just went to post the 2800136 part number and saw your post. I have to order one for my 68 360 auto. Should fit right in? Moper says its a fit, bolts right in. Been lots of info about the ones you have to cut plastic off as well as other tips to make them fit. I want a tried and true bolt with out trimming the terminal stud etc.
 
Hey every car is different, he did a great job on making it fit, Dam I broke two noses off on my 440 pretty much the same reason and then did almost the same thing he did. Good job showing us how to get er done.
