ok maybe this is a stupid question, but what should I ask for at the parts counter to get a mini-starter for my 73 /6 duster. or should I go pull one from a yard?
I haven't changed out the boat anchor yet because it's been working fine until this morning when it started making a groaning noise after I let the key off, so if I'm going to replace it I'm going to upgrade while I'm at it.

i'm not aware of "parts" stores stocking mini starters, (kragen, napa, etc.) but i believe that Jegs and summit racing stock mopar mini starters. Gonna cost more than a standard one though.

Ask for a 1993 Dodge D350 w/360, thats the one I used on my son's 72 /6 Scamp. I'm sure there are others to ask for but I own a D350 so I knew it was the small starter. Headers do not trap it on the slant. JWH

'99 Dakota is what I used because I was driving one at the time. Works fine on a '66 Valiant slant.

Mines off of a Diplomat with a 318 if I remember right. Too busy looking at the underside of the car at the starter rather than pay attention to what it was really. Think it was an 85 or so. Somewhere in there. Picked it up out of the local self serve auto salvage for $5 or something like that. Cleaned it up, had it tested at the parts store and then bolted it on. Starts the Slant up in a hurry, nice and roomy there now, sort of sounds like a Honda starting up. No problems on install on the '71 Swinger other than moving a clamp that held the positive cable on the inner wing panel over a bit to gain a bit more room to move the cable around at the starter.

Your own preference on new or yard starter. New/rebuilt has the guarantee, is nice and clean and ready to go. Down side is initial price. Used is a matter of finding one which should not be all that hard especially if you have a self serve yard (which I've found to be cheaper). Then it is the gamble of if it is a duffer or a good one. I just looked for the best condition one I could find and found the closest parts store to the yard to have it tested. I got to see it working and stood there to ensure they "accidentally" did not leave off the ground cable while testing (ask me sometime about a few stores that did this). Also got to see the draw on it. Knock on wood been working fine for quite a while now. If you have it tested and it does not work most yards give you a certain period to return it and exchange it for another. No guarantee other than this, but quite a bit cheaper initial cost wise.

Cheers

I picked mine up for $15 with a 30day warranty at the local yard. It was out of a 3.9liter V6. It's the same for all the magnum motors. From early 90's on either Ram Trucks, Dakota's, Ram Vans, and even some Cherokee's with the mag motor. Cheaper than the core charge at the parts place.

woo hoo, thanks for the abundance of replies!

64wagon, I was wondering how the "core" thing would work at the parts counter .... yeah uh here you go... plunk... " is that a yugo motor?"

Most of the time they don't even compare the part number to the part on core returns. Unless the old starter won't fit in the box. Or the shape of the packaging.
