Modifying And Welding a Cast iron head

-
Good luck with the project. If you go with the angle of the red lines, will you have sufficient cooling for your needs? Are any mods needed to the cooling system?

this head will be a race motor but i might find its way onto the street lol

but no it shouldn't be an issue... the valve seat is still stock and most of the tube will have water around it...

Put the head in the oven @400 for 30 minutes, use a high nickel rod. tap any weld you can get to. Back in oven, turn oven off and let it slowly cool.

saved!

what do you mean by "tap" any weld?? would this stress relieve it?? also would you do it after its has cooled?

tapping means "peening" the weld and yes you do it right after you do a short section of weld to stress relieve it. Another option that I have actually done with sucess is the small "cobra" torch and use cast iron flux with a cast iron rod. very littlw preheat is needed but you got to have the right flux and rod or it wont work. It also didnot work when I tried this with a regular torch so the cobra torcj is worth it just to weld cast iron. (too bad some one stole my whole welding setup including the mig0
