Modifying my 68 Valiant gas cap...

I have seen posts about changing the gas caps to a flip style, a more modern with a door, but I wondered if this would work. Remove the "handle" on the cap and add some finger grooves. Do you think there would be enough "leverage" to open the cap this way? I need to find a spare cap to try. Heres a concept...
