Mopar 400 2bbl

-
NASCAR, LOL Its a totally stock class. No port work of any kind, no mods to the carb, limited to 10 to 1 compression, no domes, piston has to be zero deck or below, no headers, 2bbl carb, no roller cam or rockers of any kind, limited to .470" lift at valve(we have .475" on the best one), no aftermarket speed parts of any kind, stock valve size, must pull 13 inches of vacuum at 800rpm and must pass a tear down inspection. Very limited in what we can do.

Sorry, but some things that happen at MRL stay at MRL LOL

I hear you buddy. So then the cam is a custom grind then? THose duration @.050 figures look like the Lunasty Voodoo 268, but that has much more lift. Still an impressive build, Mike. Nice job.

This is what I like, a good parts selection. "Super light weight valve train" and a cam selection that has .494"/.513" lift..........but yields .470" in the engine. Oh, hi Rob.

Yup off the shelf cam, Lunati Voodoo 60303. With the poor rocker ratio the "best" we got was .475" on 1 valve. Most were under the .470" limit.

Do you think most of the lift shortage was due to the rockers?

Sweeet. I like what you are doing with 400 motors.
I've always thought they A- were underrated by the factory (literally), and by the public, and B- had lots of untapped potential.

HP was right smack in the middle of my two guesses, and TQ is outta the ballpark.
I like the TQ curve. I's early, broad, and you have 400 up to 4000 RPM. NICE!!!

...also LOVE the 383 2bbl head trick. What's the diff in cc?

...also LOVE the 383 2bbl head trick. What's the diff in cc?

In 1966 the 440 used the exact same head as a 383 -2bbl .

I'm thinking the lack of an increase with the manifold change has a little more to do with the 1.60 exhaust valve and the small exhaust port of the 516 head??

Is there a fuel spec for this class ? Would a 915 head of been a bad choice , or even an F casting 906 ?

These heads were 76cc after chamber mods.

Has to run pump gas, no "E" fuel, like E85. The 915's are banned, the 906's wont give the quench or the compression I wanted. I will take quench and compression over flow all day long.

What was the cost on that build if you dont mind me asking? I'm interested in a similar build sometime in the next year. No circle track or racing action, for an original 66' Fury VIP. I'd like to keep a stock appearance of the engine and car.

TIA

Comment from customer after his first race,

"The engine has a ton of torque, I can spin the tires halfway down the track if I am not careful. Now I have to work on the set up of the car to handle all this power. I need to get it to dig harder coming out of the turns, all day I was driving sideways down the track and was still able to keep up with them. I finished 4th but I am sure once the car is set up so I can dig coming out of the corner, nobody will catch me."

Mike, just ballparkin it.....and I trust your ballpark....lol.....what do you think a good matched 4 barrel, intake and headers would do for it?

60-80hp easy. With a solid cam even more, maybe 100hp over what we got here.

Now with RPM heads carefully ported, or EZ/SR or 915 LaRoy ported heads, Single plane intake, 850 carb and a solid roller, Ill take a stab and say 625-650hp all day long. I can just about guarantee it. And yes, thats a 400, not a stroker.

Any Orders? Come on, lets get one of you the Baddest 400 BBM there is, and on pump gas!

I might be talking to you about pointers for a street-friendly but healthy 383 build :D

Great little 400 Engine there !
Always GREAT to see what can be done with a little efort !
Kinda makes a case as to the "why" or "why-nots" for the street, when some guys just want a respectable "driver" style engine on the cheap ?

We did something similar for a "resto" 383 type build for a guy awhile back using the 516's....
Completely el cheapo parts all supplied in the "rebuilder" kit
Stock Cast Pistons, cast Rings, 516 Heads @ 2.08" with the 1.74" exhaust added, etc., etc.
with the addition of
* ARP Rod Bolts
* 274H CompCams Hydraulic Cam
* Crane Rockers & a Torker 383 Intake

yep, it had Headers installed for the Dyno test.....but at 9.2;1 C.R. it idled great on regular unleaded, wasn't eating much air really, and he was pretty happy with the result for a "driver" type deal.
430hp & 444 Trq.

Yeah I'd love to. lol

"Sorry Mike, didn't finish the last race.
We had fast time, finished 2nd in the heat race. The car was pushing, but we didnt make any changes because the rear was hooked up and we thought that as the track cooled, the push would go away. when the main rolled around i again started in back (they invert the order) the problem with this is if a fast car sandbags during qualifying, they end up in front in the main with all the other fast cars in the rear. that happened last night. one fast car started the main in front so after 10 laps he was half a track ahead of everyone else. I started in the very back, made some great moves and was in 2nd by the 10th lap. I spent the next 10 laps running him down. about 2 laps after I broke away from the pack, I had a 1/4 lap lead on the other cars. The car was dialed in and i was moving. I caught the leader at about lap 20, spent a few lap behind him waiting for him to go into the corner too fast and wash up. he did, I slid under him and passed him like he was not even there. I ran in the lead for about 8 laps, had a comfortable lead of about 6-8 cars ahead of him and nothing to stop me. then coming out of turn 4, I felt the rear end shift and i started to get a vibration. two laps later, the transmission blew. The car had so much torque that it broke the center bolt that holds the leaf springs together, that allowed the right rear axle to move back and forth on the leaf springs when i would accelerate and slow down. The rapid angle changes on the drive line eventually was too much for the transmission and it blew. It was a moral victory because it was hooked up and running great and i stomped their asses big time. I took a hit in the points and lost the point lead, but I am only 7points out and have 4 races left. I can do that. I totally blame this on you. That engine was a torque monster and broke my car. I will get her fix and kick some ***."

Oh well, cant win them all!

Did you use an early or later casting block? Does that even matter anymore? I remember the 71/230 casting being the most sought after years back. Thoughts/comments?

Good numbers Mike, but a small block in my opinion would be a smarter choice, mopars are nose heavy, I wouldn't ever consider a B or RB engine because of the weight alone.. We like our cars to handle, that's the key in circle track....

I guess what I am saying is, build a small block version so we can see the numbers, 2 barrel oval track type build. Heck, I don't even know of a track that allows anything other than a small block here in the south, most of the tracks are pushing the GM crate motors..Interesting build though!

400...........It's the big block with a reputation ---worse then the 318.

No respect lol........I think they are one of the best engines ever made.

Strongest block....largest bore....whats not to like.

I can't wait to start mine up when it's done.

5000 grand convertor/.557 cam/victor intake/stock bottom end with ported 452's cut down for a little more compression.
4.56 gears..............................................:burnout:

He orderd a BBM, he was running a 383. His $$$$ and thats what he wanted.

The car speaks for it self. He out runs anyone on the track. No Chevy SB can even come close to hanging with him. This 400 has more torque than any SBM will ever get you with the tight rules they have, and torque is wat gets these heavy cars out of the corners lightning fast!

Gotcha..... if he gets that thing to handle, he should really kick ***! Those torque numbers are really strong!
