motor wont turn over?

i did pull the timing chain off intending to replace it with a double roller. Well, money got tight so I jut put the new/stock chain and gears back in, only thing i can think is that I must not have lined the dots up on the cam gear and crank perfectly.

Here's your problem!

I agree with ramcharger - if the only thing you changed was the timing chain - and no other parts, your cam timing must be off somehow.

You can eyeball check this by looking at the tdc mark and cyl # 1 exh and intake valves, if its in synch the exh and int valves should be closed on the compression stroke for cyl 1 firing at TDC, dont forget there is an exhaust stroke as well.

well, I figured it out. the hard way. it was the heads. when I tore the engine down to inspect the top end I used a different setof heads. I had a set on the shelf, shaved ten thousanths. I guess between the heads and the flat top pistons there was to much compression with the plugs in. after tearing it back down for the 3rd time I swapped heads and she turns over just fine. I just can't beleive that ten-thousanths would make that big of a difference. Like I said, this is the first time I have ever had this problem, and it seems like I have run these heads on a flat top motor before but I just can't remember for sure. but any way, thank you guys for the help

I have read somewhere that those mini starters can turn over a 12:1 compression motor like nothing. So you must had like 14:1 compression!

yea it's a pretty crazy deal, I would have never thought that ten-thousanths off a set of heads and flat tops could be such a bad combination. The mini starter works awesome, I will never again run a mopar without one.

Am I missing somthing here. With your timing gear off a tooth or two the engine still will TURN OVER.Even with the timing chain off the motor will still turn over.He is not talking about starting his motor.Hes talking about it locking up right?A valve would hit a piston before a plug would.Unless the plug was way way to long.
Here a idea put all the plugs in.Put a breaker bar and socket on the crank bolt and see if you can turn the motor over bay hand .This may eliminate a few things it may be.
The hole thing sounds odd to me.I still may bet on a starter bind.but who knows.

To much compression so it would not turn over. That sounds odd to me.Sure it wasn't somthing other than that? Jim

Even with the timing chain off the motor will still turn over.

Just for fun, try turning over a fresh 10:1 or 11:1 engine with no pushrods or timing chain and the spark plugs installed with a breaker bar.
