OK, here's the deal. I just bought a 68 Dart with a well built 360. It is loud as hell. Shakes the neighborhood. My neighborhood is a quiet one and the local police are tough.I'm looking for a muffler that will give me a nice rumble, but not wake the dead. LOL!! The 360 has hooker headers and I'm planning on running a 2.5" exhaust through an X pipe. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Frank

do you know what's on it right now for mufflers? I've always like the sounds of some of the magnaflow's, but that's just a personal preference.

The 3 quitest mufflers I have ever run are;

Thrush , cheap units. They cost me about $17 a few years ago.
Hooker Aero Chambers, $50 a pop.
Summit racings @ 2-1/2 inchs. They came with the exhaust kit.

For cruiseing the quite hood, call summit. On acceleration, you'll not be disapointed.

i like flowmasters. built tough as hell with a nice low rumble but sound off when punched

I'm not sure what's on there now. I have to get it up in the air to look. The car used to have nitrous on it and it only has short pipes off the headers into the mufflers andthen turn outs under the doors. Everything looks pretty new. I know an X pipe will tone it down a bit, but I don't know how much.I doubt it will tone it down enough.

If you're looking to keep the dead..dead, then Magnaflows aren't what you want. They have a nice sound at idle... but punch it and the dead will be knocking at your door:)

Had a set and know that for a fact!

My personal favorite is the flowmasters. You can get them in the delta flow version that is real quiet but sound great. My second choice and a close one at that is the Dynomax super turbo. Great sound and quiet. You figure everything will be loud at full throttle. The Super turbos are real quiet at part throttle and the flow master is just a little louder. The most important thing to realize is your car is loud because of the exhaust configuration. A set of tail pipes with turn downs are going to be the quietest, Even if you use your current mufflers and just put on some tailpipes you will be astounded at the difference. Try it and if its still too loud then change the mufflers. With tailpipes its also good to know that an x pipe or a good crossover will get rid of the glass pack rap that some cars get. Good luck.

whats "glass pack rap"...

CSX,
You want mufflers that work and are nice sounding and flow well and sound way cool with an X? I'd avoid any chambered mufflers (relatively high sound level) and they flow not so well.
Instead, look at the Goerlich XLERATOR X118. They will flow more than most anything, be quieter than most anything but the Dynomax SuperTurbo and at 18", they are a direct fit on A-Bodies.

Next in my list would be MagnaFlow 18" versions.

Or, if you can fit them, Dynomax 17748's are great but at 20" long, they are tougher to fit (shot below).

If you were rich, buy these VOE mufflers from www.waldronexhaust.com

not to hijack, but joe did you have the muffler shop fab up the pipes leading to and out of the x pipe, or were there extensions with the xpipe?

i bought the mufflers, collectors, cut outs and x-pipe. the muffler shop ran every inch of pipe.

This is 'ZACKLY correct! Everybody likes to talk mufflers, but a car with out tail pipes is LOUD!
