Multi Tone Hate.....Who's with me?

No !! wasnt inspired by ol' Chip

Sorry man, but I just can't get behind that paint scheme. I'm not trying to say that what you did is wrong because it's your car, but for those like me that dislike the two-tone jobs, yours is a text-book example of the breed.

Just curious, if you're not inspired by Chip, then what made you decide to use those colors in that particular scheme? Looks like kinda raspberry on top and charcoal below?

The factory spends a significant amount of time trying to figure out what works for their designs. As an example, I dislike the high impact colors myself, but at the same time, I wouldn't choose a custom scheme either. Again, I'd stick with a factory color for the model year.

Hope that doesn't sting too much, I'm just an opinionated guy with very particular tastes.

I don't like the gawdy paint jobs personally so I won't paint my car like that. That said I think if a scheme looks god for the car go for it.
RPM and REs1vw21 and my68/6GT not that you truly care what I think but those are good looking paint jobs. Me I am going to stick with the original color on mine Vintage Red Poly. To each his own.

Nope doesnt sting me. Everyone has a right to their opinon no matter how wrong they are. :-D

The car was in a class of 9 other cars all with flat basic paints and they all lost too it. So I guess the "Bling" factor works.

This car was the most butt ugly green and no trim at all when i got it. It needed brightened up.

I had the idea for going two tone on it ohhhhhh say 19 years ago.
I wanted a candy apple on top back then and gun metal on the bottom. Now if it wouldnt have taken me 19 years to do it I guess I would have had a real WILD car back in 1989 huh ? I dropped the candy apple for Electric Lazer Red and Liquid Metalic Grey. So ya......not Foose inspired.

Either ya like it or ya dont, I can live with that. I guarantee though if ya saw it at a show you would wander over to it and eventually say " damn that freaking cool" ;) It draws crowds.

are chrysler colors to boot!

if i had to be stuck with just one color,id just prime itand drive it,i don t like just one color. As far as copying foose,he must be pretty good ,because all you guys know his name and his work at least, even if you dont like it.Im gonna paint my 71 kinda mild, just 3 colors, hemi oarnge, viper silver stripe, and black on the bottom. Now the next car im gonna step up a few notches, and show yall what wild looks like!Sure, yall might not like it,might think its butt ugly, but i guarnatee my cars get attention.Oh,and i race every one i build,so it will been seen at the track too.

I know Coddington's name too. But the guy struck me as a pompous ***

Chip Foose and his ilk absolutely RUIN cars. When was the last time you saw someone show up at the drags or a street race with one of these overdone monstrosities? Two-tone paint definitely does not make you go faster.

Big wheels are the worst. Absolutely an import-derived 'trend'. Most of the big wheels I see have no dish in them, the inners are typically flush with the outer rim which is because they were originally intended for FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS. All those pseudo strengthening bolts, too many spokes, blacked out inner sections... blech. And, lo-pro tires look RIDICULOUS on muscle cars. I look at cars online and think to myself, if I bought that car with those giant rims, first thing I'd do is shitcan those things and get a set of Cragars...

All muscle cars should be radio DELETE. The only music should come from a well-tuned power plant and the only notes that should be discernible are that of a rumbling exhaust.

And lastly, muscle cars should have an all-business interior - the less gee-gaws, the better. Vinyl bench or buckets, minimal gauges, plain door panels... they're not supposed to be comfortable. If you want creature comforts, get an RV.

The street rodification of muscle cars will probably stick a round, but hopefully the hardcore enthusiast would never dream of defiling the original integrity of a factory hot rod.

Harumph!

I see your point.......However a manual steering, 9" drum brake, lap belts, 3500lb car is not the safest thing on the road. I guess for those who like modern styling and conveniences should let the old muscle cars rot in fields and be crushed into manhole covers.

The automotive aftermarket is a multi-billion $$ industry, so I would assume you are in the minority opinion

My old duster had fiberglass bucket seats with fenderwell headers, You couldnt even drive it in the hot summer days, you would have enough water running down the crack of your *** to turn a waterwheel. I learned my lesson ,build em to drive them. Air conditioning and overdrive, efi. Two tone paint looks ok to me too, when done tastefully.

I'm usually in the minority with most of my opinions, but I'm not really sure how you equate my dislike of 'modern styling' with letting cars rot in fields. Is modern styling the only way to make them cool?

Aren't they inherently cool with the original style paint and equipment?

I'm not against upgrading to better running gear at all. I swapped my 9" drums for disks, rebuilt my suspension with more modern componentry, etc. I just like a factory appearance and period-correct pieces. I think the overdone aspect of these high-dollar builds removes the initial draw of these types of cars, which is a raw visceral experience not having much to do with appearance.

Why the need to put a personal, quasi-artistic stamp on something that's already good? I like a more subtle approach as opposed to smacking you over the head with flashy, shiny stuff that screams LOOK AT ME.

More people into the hobby, means less cars rotting in fields. More parts developed (ie body panels).

The styling is inheritantly cool, except original style paint. Modern paints are 100x better than those in the past.

Modern styling can be done without "smacking you over the head", although you are right in that most people miss the boat....

IMO, its not just big wheels and slammed. Coil-overs, tubular front ends, big disc brakes all around, new hemi crate motors, 4 or 3 link rear ends. These old cars are handling and performing better than ever with this "new age" styling. I think its great.

I don't mind multicolor paintjobs provided that the colors are complimentary and that they follow and/or accent the lines of the car. Painting something a bunch of colors just for the sake of having the entire House Of Kolor catalog represented on one car makes my brain bleed. I suppose that if someone wants to spend $25,000 on paint and I'm not masking it, my opinion doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

That being said; most of the amish-quilt-inspired paintjobs still aren't as migrane-inducing as some of the vans I remember from the 70s. As long as the trend stays away from visually depicting entire Wagnerian operas along the sides of some classic iron, we're okay. 8)

That's hilarious. True too. There were some awful paint jobs back in the '70s, but somehow they fit the cars and the time.

I personally wouldn't paint a car like these below, they're pretty gaudy.

If someone had a paint job like this today, what would people say?

You're definitely not gonna like the paint on the Sedan then:cheers:

That Newport looks GREAT

Thank you! (I think you are referring to mine if not just disregard) When I did the top it made the car look shorter and I get a lot more complements on it. I have been tiring to figure out how I can paint it like the Monico, but it is so original and the body lines just aren't quite the same.

I like a lot of the modern multi-color paint schemes. There a lot more tasteful than the lace & murals of the early 70's. Back then design didn't matter, the more ridiculous the car looked the better.

The big diameter wheels & short sidewall tires are a different story. They look like somebody put bicycle wheels on a car.

I once had a guy ask me:Why would you paint your car THAT colour?I told him to ask Mr.Dodge.People paint there cars the colours they are because it,s their car.Don,t like it,keep your comments to your self!!I like solid colours myself.I also like factory stripes.:happy10:

I don't mind the drag cars looking gawdy, or multi toned or striped, it makes them stand out in the crowd, but those same schemes for a street car are a little silly.

I think the snake skin barracuda above is pretty cool for a drag car.

I really dig the modernization of these old muscle cars. You can easily maintain the styling integrity of our cars while modernizing and throwing on some cool paint too. I'm not going to do a multi-color per-say, just painting the stripe on, but I too think the multi-color rides can look real good if done tastefully. My definition of tasteful is likely different than many others but that's why I'm building mine the way I am, cuz the vision in my mind is BAD!!! I can dig bigger wheels too as long as it's proportioned, 17's and even 18's look right at home on these cars with the right meet. Anything over 18 and I have to question someone's sanity and their own tastes, but that's just cuz it conflicts with mine. I had 20's on my Durango and it looked real nice. There again, I had proportionate meat to create balance. I'm looking forward to getting mine back on the road in some years with all the new modern goodies I'm going to do. We got the technology to make em better, faster, more comfortable and better looking, might as well use it.

I agree with you wylde1. I love every thing about the car but the rubber band wheels. imoa old cars look better with rubber.

I guess the good thing about "modernizing rather than letting them rot in the fields" is that in 10 years when you all have realized the error in you ways, you will have a solid foundation for proper restorations ... LOL!
