Old newspapers covered with filler, metal patches epoxied over rust holes.
that's nothin'- when I painted my '66 Mustang, I found that the pass. side lower quarter panel was packed dirt that had been sanded smooth and painted. Hey, I never knew (and it was like that for about 10 years and still looked fine until I sanded into it lol).
 
I used wire screen and bondo back in the day. I have learned how to weld in patch panels since then.
 
My brother once built a toyota corolla out of spray foam and bondo. The bottom 4 inches were gone when he got it. The final touch was a good coat of caterpiller yellow paint brushed on. That little yoda looked good as a fifty-footer for at least three years after that. Try doing that to a real car and it would fall out after a year!
 
My first 65 Barracuda was like that, except it was even better. They put rags in the bottom of quarters and then filled them with foam.:banghead:
