My 71 Duster Project

-
Here is an update on some more progress. I am plugging along nicely. Today I worked on some more wiring in the engine bay and worked on the fuel tank plumbing. I cleaned up the fuel ECS tube and re-installed the plumbing. It turned out pretty nice! Next I plan to install all the fuel hose from the ECS tube to the fuel tank and then I am pretty much at a standstill on everything until the motor and tranny go in. In the meantime I plan to tape off the interior and start block sanding the car. Then once the drivetrain goes in, its off to the booth for paint! Here are some pics from today.

I finished up the interior by painting the door panels and detailing the duster emblem on the driver door. I need to order a new emblem for the passenger side as it was all cracked, but they seem to be very hard to find.

Sorry I have not kept up. Your car is really coming together.

Here are some pictures from the progress today. I started working on the fuel system and got the fuel tank re-installed. I basically upgraded the fuel lines to 3/4 and bent the new ones out today. They turned out pretty good. I do this for a living with the Navy so this was an easy job! I also installed all the new fuel vapor lines for the ecs tube and fuel tank.

Well, I was having a pretty good day with the car installing the new fuel lines until the UPS guy showed up with the package from Brewers. I ordered a new shifter mounting plate since I had a B body one on there, some shifter linkage bushings and misc clips/washers. Well, once the new plate went on, I re-installed the shifter and linkages and of course the reverse linkage did not line up. Looking at my shifter, it does not have the kickback on the lower reverse lever like the A-body shifters have. Mine is just straight down and that is the difference that I need to attach the reverse rod. I just finished pricing the hurst shifter body and it is pricey! I am getting tapped out with money and buying a new one of these was not budgeted so I am SOL for now! UGGGHHHH!!! This tranny conversion from the B-body to an A-body is starting to get pricey! Anyways, enough of my venting, here are some pics from today.

Well, after talking with my Dad the other day about getting this motor installed, he brought up a very good point. The motor has pretty much been sitting around in the garage for about 10 years now without being turned over at all. Some worries are, valve springs losing tension due to sitting in one position that long, dried out seals, etc... The last thing I want to worry about is getting the motor reinstalled and have it let go right away. So I called the builder today and they say that as just an estimate, it will be between 1200-2000 for the motor depending on what needs to be done to it. They could not give me a for sure price until they get the motor and tear it down. Basically he is gonna tear it down, hot tank the block, and then once he finds out what is good/bad in the motor he can give me a more solid answer. He says with the low miles on it, he should be able to just renew the piston rings, hone, do headwork, and basically go through the whole motor. He also recommended going to a roller setup for the cam, lifters, rockers and said I will need a bigger carb as the 650 is holding back the potential. Based on what we talked about he suggested the 770 Holley Avenger. This all includes the inital cranking, break-in and dyno tuning stating the motor should net somewhere around 400hp to the rear wheels once finished. I plan to bring the motor to him next month so I will keep you all posted. What you all think? Any recommendations/suggestions?

Here are some pictures of the wiring progress. I got the fuse block mounted and started wiring the rear section of the car. I had the boy helping me read out the old harness for fun. I am at my Dad's this week helping out around the house and getting the motor ready to head to the builder. I will post pics of that in a few. I will load it into my truck on Wednesday and deliver it to Fresno Performance for a projected 400hp build.

nice to see you and your son working on wiring ,

Sorry i hat wiring work i am a noob from wiring .

I hear ya! I actually do not mind wiring at all. It actually looks worse than it is. It is just time consuming work, especially when you are a perfectionist like I am. My son is always wanting to help me out working on the car so I give him little jobs here and there.

Well, I got the motor all loaded up and strapped in ready for the trip. More to come when I drop it off.

Well, today was a very long day of driving. It took me 6 hours to get to the shop, and another 4 hours of driving home. I spent about an hour talking with the builder over what I want done with the motor. It looks like I am getting a hydraulic roller cam, lifters and roller rockers at a minimum. He really cannot tell me too much until he tears down the block and finds out whats already been done to it. It was built once before, so I already know it has a street cam and headwork done and it may already have a forged bottom end in it. If the bottom end is not forged, I am gonna go that route plus whatever else they suggest for the HP I am after. I will keep you all posted on the final specs for the build. Here are a couple of pics of them offloading it and the shop.

Well I had to tear apart the rearend today because the engine builder called to ask what the gear ratio was. Found out it has 3.23 gears with a sure grip, and has the 742 case installed. Upon disassembly I discovered that the axles were pretty much worn out. There were almost no splines left on the ends. The ring and pinion looks almost new. The only problem now is that the builder says I should go to 3.73 gears. I dont really want to swap out gears if I dont need to, but kinda need to go with what is recommended as well. I was already planning on swapping the axles anyways to a 4.5 BBP chromoly axle since I am using wheels spacers on the SBP ones. Here are some pics!

The axle splines look sad, good time to replace them with some bbp ones and kill 2 birds with one stone.
Why not go with 3:91's and sell the 3:23's ?

I hear ya, they have seen better days! I probably will sell the 3:23's and go either 3:73 or 3:91 whichever works. I am waiting to hear back from the builder on pricing and the recommended gear ratio of the two.

Well it has been awhile since I last posted. We have been super busy around here trying to get things ready for the big move in two weeks. I was able to tinker with the car yesterday so here are some pics. I got the new pedals and brake line kit and started installing the forward lines, and master cylinder. Brake lines were from Right stuff. I am scheduled to go into the paint booth on Monday to paint the car finally. I will be spending all day today and tomorrow block sanding and taping everything off. More to follow...

Well, I got the car towed over to the paint booth on Monday. After looking everything over in the sunlight, we saw too many imperfections so we unloaded it and decided to block the car one more time. Here are some pictures from this week. I am planning to re-shoot primer again tomorrow. I will take lots of pics. Paint is planned for Monday morning.
