my Low dollar 318 hop-up project

-
I have a stock unused felpro head gasket if u r needing
Thanks again, however, I'll buy from the parts store as part of the cost because this is what 99% folks will have to do to complete their project.

This is nice man. A step by step budget how too. Don't get no better. Good job.

The praise is justified and echoed here since there hasn't been a whole lotta "How to..." Threads on engine hop ups lately. I did one a few years back. It got cut short and the ride was sold. I'm just back logged with "Adult responsibilities" (AKA Crap!) first. UGH!

Believe me! If there is one thing I love to do is just tinker. (F^*+ around)

Would this process be similar with similar results on an earlier 318?[/QUOTE

This principle would work, yes. If your talking a poly 318, I've never pulled the heads on one of them. What I'm doing on the heads would work on any LA small block. Some choices I make on this project would be different if I was working with a 360, for example

thanks RRR & Rumblefish

Because I don't know what I'm doing, it's in 2 videos.... LOL ! I forgot to mention, always wear safety glasses! I will post more pictures on the intake side of the porting later.

Ok, somebody needs to help me, can't upload the videos.. :pale:
I tried the URL from you tube, tried straight from the camera, no luck... :(

Can anyone help?? If you go to utube and type in DSCN02721 you will get my 1st video. the 2nd video is DSCN02731.

If someone can post them for me, in order, I'd appreciate it......

Awesome videos.....!
So we're looking at about an hour per cylinder .....8 hours of work total...
Safety glasses AND ear plugs.....!

What kinds of gains will this give? (rough guess)

I like this kind of work because it's next to free....just gotta put in the time and effort!

Also, what is your opinion on hand-lapping the valves to the seats? A friend gave me the hand-held suction cup tool and fine/course lapping compound....good idea or leave it alone?

Jeff

P.S. THANKS!!!!!

:burnout:

Thanks, and yes I wear ear plugs when I do this... lol !

I can't tell you horsepower gains, but I usually drop about 4 - 5 tenths in a 1/4 mile. Component matching is key

You are also correct, because it's next to free. People will spend 300 bucks to drop 3 tenths, so this is a real bang for the buck. Your time estimation is right, about 8 hours total on the porting. Folks gotta understand that I'm not going to catch that '73 340 duster by "shooting the breeze with the buddies" over an open hood...., and when I only have 499.00 bucks to spend, and I'm behind on gearing to start with, well, it's going to take some elbow grease, not a magic wand.

LOL.... on the lapping, because that is where I'll be heading once the heads are ported and cleaned up! Budget isn't going to pay for a valve job... I will post on that when I get to that part, I do have a preference.

A BIG THANK YOU to evernite, for posting my videos. Thank you, friend!!!!!!!!

I love where this is going! Those videos were great too. I've got a spare '68 318 on a stand with the heads off of it right now... you're giving me ideas.

Can't wait to see how this project of yours turns out. Subscribed.

Cool build! When I was younger, (broke), I always wanted to see what could be done to a 318 on a tight budget. I has actually started to work on a set of stock 318 heads, but never finished.

Thanks for the "socket and screw driver tip!" I started some port work on a pair of 318 heads some time back, and that tip shows me that I still have room to work. With the socket in hand, I see exactly where to remove the material. Mine don't have the lumps that your smog heads have, so the floor and roof are a lot smoother. I took more off the guide boss, but I didn't go crazy with it either. Thanks for the tips and for this thread!

Very cool using common tools as a guide. Great ingenuity.

Awesome thread, I'm swapping cams in my 340 dart and was thinking I should pull the heads and do some clean up as well.

I think I forgot to mention in the videos that the exhaust port that has the extra port that goes to the intake manifold gets a little different attention. I just try to port the flow towards the exhaust port instead of making it head towards the intake manifold.

Also, to those that are wondering why on the intake side of the port entrance, why I suggested just a straight file between the two intake ports to smooth the casting at the entrance and recommended not thinning down that wall is simple. I like a good surface to be sure of no gasket leaks. If you want to thin that wall down, you might gain a small amount, but I don't like to do that.

P.S. - I got just 4 more intake valves to do and the port work is done :D
