Our schools never had that. Eventually you couldn't smoke on school property so they went across the road. I'm sure the people would be pissed with all the butts on the ground. I never did smoke but went over there anyway.
Ya the class of 76 kinda messed it up. Not me personally but a bunch of guys got caught gambling in there. When the school division caught wind of it they closed the Common room permanently in mid June. Actions of a few, you know the rest

We had what was called the Common room. If you were 18, age of majority in Canada you could smoke in the school in that room, just like the staff room for teachers. Circa 1976
Ours was called The Pit, and it was just a set of seldom-used doors leading outside. I didn't smoke (never have), but I recall it was cold as hell walking past there, while changing classes, in the middle of the winter, as someone would always prop one of the doors open.

We had a “smoking hole” at our high school, back in the late 70’s! Like Bazza above it was just a back hallway with a set of seldom-used doors. My mom was a teacher at the school, they would randomly assign teachers “smoking duty” to stand at the doors and make sure the smokers didn’t prop the doors open or smoke inside the building. It was always a hallway to be avoided, it was cold in the winter due to the doors being opened and the putrid pervasive smell of smoke never dissipated!!

My high school had a designated area near the Auto shop where smoking was allowed. I did smoke then, but didn't spend all of my breaks there, some of us used the exhaust hoses in the shop to 'vent' our evidence and the butts went in the floor drain.
I was walking down the second floor hallway one day when I casually lit up a smoke, before I realized that I was inside the school, but quickly made my way out before I got caught. That was in 1980-81.

Our smoking area was outside of the AG shop and vocational building. Even the teachers came out there, rain or shine. That was back in the late sixties.

In 76 my senior year we had an open campus. We would just smoke in our cars or in a friends if we didn't have one. They stopped it 77.
