On a long trip home, we put baby crib mattress on back seat. We drove all night and baby slept soundly. We would be locked up now-a-days.

back when me an the wife were first dating, i had a 4 door Opel Kadett, but i had swapped the seats out for GSI seats, basically bucket seats out of the sportier 2 door version

as a result, these seats folded all the way flat

the first time i took her to paris i rolled up a small mattress and stuffed it in the backseat
when we got there, i pulled over on the side of the road, flipped the seats all the way forward, unrolled the mattress and we slept right there on the side of the road, under the shadow of the eifel tower...those were the days
