I just looked it up, there are several states that studs are illegal. But most states they are legal seasonallly. It was always neat in our younger days-street racing on country highways at night with studs. Most of us had 4 speeds. Watching 2 cars dump their clutches with studs was a sight to remember!
Good thing none of us ever had leaky gas tanks.
 
The car or tire industry has most people believing that all season tires are good enough in the winter time. I use studded radial snow tires and I can get around a lot better than a lot of 4wd's. I believe that if everyone used these studded tires, there would be 90% less accidents, at least in the city.
Not allowed here except if you live way up north.

Spent a winter in Rochester and I ran Blizzaks on my little Mazda Miata. They worked great.
