Did you check the timing chain for slack?

yup there wasn't much and no noticeable difference when turning the the crank and the movement at the distributor rotor

And the winner is......

loose oil slinger

the noise is gone and I went ahead and flushed the radiator and block while I was at it, adjusted the valves, fine tuned the idle screws, and adjusted the timing. Took it for a short ride and it seems to be running well! Thanks for everyone's help!
