necking down after collecter?

Rowdy is 106 miles away from me. While I could tow it there, I will have to wait until they are needed again. There is no exhaust on it, the motor and trans are brand new, can't drive with open headers, but yeah, someone told me about Rowdy before. I talked to him and he was very intelligent, priced right, and does great work. Just a bit far for the build this time around, but the next time I need exhaust work, I'm drivin' to him, even if I need it towed!


LOL you are in TEXAS! Who would hear your car with open exhaust? I grew up in the city and I drove my car all the time with open exhaust. Only got 1 ticket and if I'd have kept my mouth shut probably wouldn't have gotten that ticket.

LOL, there are new mustangs that are louder than **** here. Like no mufflers at "ALL". I'm in SA, about 2mil people here now. Back in the day I drove from SA far into east Tx with open headers. Damn do I miss those days!!!
 
Both Summit and Jegs have the Pypes 3" to 3" and 3" to 2.5" collectors. 304 stainless, tig welded. Reasonable price. I see no possible explanation for necking down to 2" and even less reason to open back up to 3". Once you've necked down for more than 6-8", it's like putting a cork on the exhaust.

We've done countless dyno tests. If you have nice TTI headers and 500hp, we would recommend a 3" to 3" collector, 3" X pipe, 3" mufflers and 2.5" tailpipes. All mandrel bent which is a MAJOR factor in choosing this consideration. If a local shop, did this same configuration, you'd lose 30-50hp. :(

I got the Summit pre fab exhaust system they sell. They just need to weld it up. The TTI headers came with the 2" extensions/collectors. The header exits 3" but the extension it came with goes down to three. I think that is where he got confused. They do pretty good work otherwise. I guess he was cornfused. lol? I guess I should have Flanagan look at it after it's all said and done see if he can improve it a bit.

The TTI headers should have 3" to 2.5" or 3" to 3" collectors. The Summit kit is probably 2.5". It's mandrel bent. So despite being disappointed it's not our Pypes kit you chose, you did ok performance wise. You should be good as long as the shop doesn't mess with the existing bends.

Do a before and after , w/ and w/o the tail pipes , u can feel the diff !!
 
Not the popular opinion, but I don't think there is such a thing as too big in that distance from the merge to the mufflers. One 3" pipe is similar in area to two of 2"pipes, but 2 of 2" pipes has ~33% more pipe skin... so if you installed a PAIR of 2s on each side, you'd end up with a lot pipeskin,er radiating area, and your muffler would not have to work so hard. lol. But I'd run about a foot and a half of merge-sized pipes first.So then.............

While a 3" pipe has about the same area as dual 2" pipes,dual 2" pipes will not flow as good as a single 3".The reason is simple, anytime you have air moving over a surface the air in immediate proximity to the surface doesn't actually move.The air "sticks" to objects, Its stationary at the object but moves faster the further away from the surface.This is known as a boundary layer.In the case of duel 2" pipes you have 33% more surface area for air to interact with and form a boundary layer.So instead of the air through a 2" pipe it acts as though the pipe is only about 1.5" because of the slow moving or turbulent boundary layer.A single appropriately sized pipe will always make more power over a duel setup with the same "area".Not to mention a single exhaust system weighs less than a duel exhaust.More power and the overall weight of the car is lower,thats a win in my book.

After reading this^^^^^^^^^^post, it sounds like ur cornfused !
 
Oh, I a case of dyslexia so bad I mix up words with words, letters with words, letters with letters, and numbers with numbers that have no similarity what so ever. The exhaust extensions inlet is 3" it tapers down rapidly to 2". Sorry.

Are you talking about a collector? The piece bolted (or welded) to the end of the headers. These can be exchanged for larger and in your case should be.

Yes, the headers, TTI headers, came with goofy collectors. We just put some 3" ones on, problem solved.
 
Hey Buddy,

Well, they already welded 3" pipe to the flange because the TTI flange is like 3/8" thick, most of them are 1/4". The inside of the flange is 3" too. Why the collector went down to 2 or 2-1/2" whatever it was, the world may never know.

I bought four 3 1/2 inch turn downs. Slipped two on the headers facing in and reversed the other two to come off of them. You can spin them and move them around to make them fit through the torsion bar cross member and the weld them together as one piece per side. Once we had them welded and slipped back in place we had hooker header tabs from summit with 1/4 20 bolts holding the tabs together.

We welded them to the pipe the complete exhaust including "Ticket resistant tailpipes" and was easily removed and installed. The only place clamps were used was to hold the front of the tailpipe up. These tabs also hold the header tube into the collector. We put never seize on all the pipes to make them easy to remove.


The TTI headers came with the 3 inch exhaust. They were and easy fit. But this wasn't my car and the customer paid the bill $$$$.$$'s. They still knock around so we used steel mounts.
