I have a PTC 8" 5500 stall that I haven't had freshened in 7 years. No issues, but will have trans. out this winter, so why not?
Should I call PTC or take it somewhere else? I've heard they were having some kind of issues.

Haven’t heard of any issues they are having other than Kenny Ford sold it.
He I believe it still there helping out. Lot of the guys who work there have been there forever.
They do my stuff too. Never had issues with them

PTC would be my first choice.
I believe the only issue is that the head guy/owner sold the business.... but he still works there and is a .Mopar lover.
Seven years, no complaints? Why try anybody else?

If it lasted 7 years and it has no issues why wouldn't you send it back to them?

They obviously built it right the first time around.

What does it mean to have a converter freshened? What all do they do with it and what's it typically cost?

They cut it open clean it and make sure none of the fins are bent, new friction material if it has any. Then they weld it back together test it and send it back. This one is costing me $250.

Seems like a good deal considering the work involved. Is there a rule of thumb for how often it needs to be freshened?

Definitely not. As a procrastinator I would wait too long and have it cost me a round. There are signs to look for in your racing performance such as inconsistent launch performance, rpm higher at finish line with same e.t's or gradually slowing e.t's with no apparent changes in motor performance. I'm sure there are others. Power level and frequency at the track as well.

I sent a broken turbo action converter to ptc to have it adjusted and repaired. Kenny himself texted me pictures then called me to see what I wanted to do with it and talk about the engine combo. If he's still involved I would not even hesitate to send it back to them. If he wasn't involved, I would do my research to make sure the quantity was the same then send it in.

I have a belief, If you learn from the best, you will become the best yourself. I have never dealt with PTC or any other outsource companies for transmissions, but they sound like a solid company to deal with.
