I just bought a 67 Barracuda Notch that came with a fresh blue print 71 318, not running and engine out of car. The car has its original 67 radiator which i would like to use, so I am aware i need to use 67 timing cover and 67 water pump. But the engine i got never came with a harmonic balancer and most standard and priced under $300 balancers say "use with 71 timing cover, driver side pointer". My pointer will be a passenger pointer otherwise the lower radiator hose will block the driver pointer. I would like to get a correct balancer that wont run me an arm and leg. Does anyone have any idea which balancer would correctly work for my set up? Thanks, welcoming all thoughts and solutions.

You will probably need to use a ‘71+ balancer and then put your own timing tape on it once you’ve found TDC.

Just thinking out loud though, you already have a ‘71 up timing cover on that engine. If you haven’t already found a ‘67 timing cover and water pump the less expensive and time consuming path may be to buy a new radiator, rather than covert everything you have to fit your current radiator. Especially if that radiator hasn’t already been tested.

Thanks so much! i though about both of these ideas. I have the 67 timing cover as i found it for a good price but i have not purchased the water pump so i can easily still go the radiator swap route if it makes more sense.

Just remark the new balancer. It has no idea what marks are on it or "WHERE" and it doesn't care.

Use any one for either style. The timing mark is 90 Degrees off. Just get a timing tape and install it 90 off

IIRC , I don't think it is exactly 90 degrees off. You need to find #1 TDC with a piston stop and then remark 0, or apply the timing tape. The tape is very useful

I would not use timing tape. It's cheap POS anymore. Just find TDC with a piston stop and mark the balancer at 0* on your pointer. Now, you need to go read this. Hillbilly timing tape by @crackedback. Just follow what it says and you'll never have to worry about timing tape slinging off.

How to - Hillbilly Timing Tape

The crank key usually points to #1 journal so if you can get crank key to point right up #1 bore, your close to TDC. Handy if your looking for a balancer.

It kind of depends on your pulleys and brackets also. All 318's were neutral balance, both cast and steel crank. With that said, any 273, 67-69 318 or 68-69 340 balancer would work, if you want to keep the early system.

Most of the OEM replacement dampers years ago had four 90 degree marks. You just need to use the tape to make those 90 marks or just divide the damper four times with a magnetic tape then remove it.

Using the correct year rad for the car vs correct brackets pulleys for the engine... do your research and pros/cons for both. I'm a "stock" type guy, but it may be "easier". To go with a 70 and up style rad as the 70 up brackets/pulleys etc are easier to find and cheaper.
FYI with our 67 cuda I bought a new 67 style water pump and the machined boss areas for pwr steering pump and for the alternator were off. I had to grind them down. Pain in the arse. I kept my original 67 wp in case I got it rebuilt.
Good luck, nice looking fish!
