I'm helping my friend on her 60 valiant slant six push button auto. It won't start with key or stay running. Car runs with a jump lead from + battery to coil and jumping either starter cylinoid or posts on starter.

So I've got power to starter cylinoid.
New starter

Tried two different ignition switches and only get power to assesories with key turned on. So no power to keep running or turn starter from key. I've traced all wires ignition related and the wires are in great shape not brittle or hacked up and showing no signs of heat. There appears to be a neutral safety switch as there is wire off ignition going down firewall to trans. I didn't know these early push button trans had those but I suspect this may be a possibility?. Other thing I need to try even though it's new is starter cylinoid just to eliminate that. I've narrowed it down and checked what I could but could use a few more ideas. Wireing is something I'm very familiar with on these cars but I am not sure how to bypass the neutral safety switch? Thanks in advance

Both. Key only gets power to fan and wipers lights. Motor turns over by jumping posts on starter or starter cylinoid but needs a jump lead from battery to coil to stay running

Forgot to mention I tried putting key in on position and jumping starter to see if it would stay running and it would not

Well, I'm no electrical guru by any stretch. Hopefully Del will jump in here.

What about ballast resistor, does it have one? I'm also not real familiar with a car that old.

Just throwing out some thoughts.

A SIXTY!!?? Not at all familiar with these physically. "If" I've ever worked on one it's been 40 years ago

Documentation is slim for these old girls

MyMopar has a bit:

Here

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

Maybe the '59 manual supplement will help I don't know

Also from MyMopar are somewhat simplified wiring diagrams, in this case, "about all we got"

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=26

And here ya go, allegedly a '60 Valiant

http://www.mymopar.com/downloads/1960/60Valiant.JPG

What is not shown on this diagram is any form of bulkhead / firewall connector. Surely there must be one? That IF PRESENT would be the no1 suspect

Find the ignition switch, near bottom right.

Get it out where you can measure voltage

RED is the main feed coming TO the switch from the ammeter. This of course should have "same as battery" at all times

DARK BLUE is IGN 1 or "ignition run". This should be same as battery when key is in "run" position. IT MAY GO DEAD normally in start positon

BROWN is the coil resistor bypass for starting, or IGN 2. It should be hot with key in start and feeds power to the coil + terminal for starting.

YELLOW is the start wire to the starting circuit. Should also be hot in start

Now this diagram shows no starter relay nor a neutral safety circuit. The '60 Chrysler book shows a starter relay so I bet they used them. If they did not, then the NSS trick has to be in the starter solenoid. If there are TWO small connections then one of them goes to ground through the NSS in park or neutral.

(A Google shows something like this:)

thanks for the 60 wireing diagram that may help. There is no firewall bulk head like my barracuda has. It's much simpler .that picture is of a Ford starter cylinoid. The starter cylinoid in car is like the one in my 65 barracuda. Except it has two wires on top for the neutral safety switch.
