Need help to identify 727 trans

This is the transmission I got with the 440 I opened up the bottom it seems very clean with just a little bit of water seepage from the oil dipstick missing.. I'm trying to find out if this is a good trans and what needs to be done or if I should just put it in and test it and see how it works

1979 727 440 engine, motorhome, short shaft
I guess someone replaced the short shaft with a long one on mine. Wouldn't a short-shaft be better and stronger? Need to get a tail yoke and looking for short shaft also
 
Also shouldn't there be some kind of a plate in between the motor and the transmission?
 
If I remember a short shaft is 18", I have one i could measure. No plate in between just a inspection cover at the bottom, thin sheet metal
 
Maybe, the trans is together and that is the last part to come out, do you really need one, do you have a drive shaft yet? I also have a inspection cover if you need one.

Just doing the 440 swap into my Dart. 500hp+ so I was told a short shaft is stronger. Haven't done the drive shaft either .send me a picture of the inspection cover to [email protected]
 
I just looked my short shaft is 9.5" from the rear of the trans to the end of the tailshaft
with a bolt on yoke. It is out of a class a motorhome. I will get some pics but it will be later.
 
All 727s that have a slip yoke are long tailshaft. This is the setup that you want for a car. If you use a short trans with the fixed yoke you will need some sort of slip joint (on trucks and motorhomes this is at the center driveshaft hanger) to allow for the loading and unloading of the rear suspension. I have never heard that the short tailshaft is stronger. Virtually all car and drag race applications of 727s use a long tail shaft and slip yoke.
 
I'm not real educated yet on Transmissions but I guess I'm about to be...

read 14,15,16 you said they never made a short tail shaft after my t-350 t-400 comment dipshit!

is a short-shaft better than a long tail shaft??pros and cons 500 horsepower motor on the street I'm eventually going to be tubbed out with roll cage. And does anyone have one for sale. I also need yoke
 
Read my earlier post. You need a slip joint (sliding yoke) transmission for a car application. There is only one length of slip joint 727. The truck and RV transmissions have a short tailshaft and fixed yoke. There is no strength difference in the two tailshafts, however the truck trans will have extra planetaries and clutches.
