So my brother and I are in the process of restoring a 64 cuda, and we cant for the life of us figure out how to use the push button automatic. It wont go in gear, it seems to just be stuck in neutral?

Seeing I have no info on this, if someone can guide me in the right direction that would be great!

Did you move the park lever to off? It won't let you select anything if it's on. Also when you select the park position it should go to neutral on its own.

yea its not doing that, its a project that we just bought so we are trying to get this thing to function or figure out whats wrong with it.

I don't remember much of anything about PB TF. You can download some of the earlier Chrysler manuals over at MyMopar. Nothing there for Dart or the B bodies, as I recall, but maybe "some of that stuff" would help

I see there's 59 Plymouth, and Chrysler all through the early sixties.............

Also look here............

The 1960, 62, and 64 stuff all looks like it might have some info..........

The videos are actually posted on Youtube, browse around there.........

Either the mechanism behind the dash, or the cable is froze up.
You'll end up taking it out to clean it up and lube it.

Good suggestion!! Them things is pesky and really start to work hard if you don't clean and lube them!

I would crawl under the car and have your brother shift the park lever back and forth! The park mechanism is located on the tail shaft of the trans! Make sure the cable isn't broken and is operating. Same with the shift cable, it goes in up closer to the front on that side!

I think I am one of the very few people here that has actually worked on these things, and my very first Mopar had the cable controlled pushbutton setup, and it was froze up from no lube and rough surfaces on the slide/s that moves the cable.

Alright awesome sounds good thanks for all the suggestions! Trail beast, seeing you know about this push button stuff would you mind a PM here and there while I work this thing out?

It isn't that hard . It takes two people. release the park lever, and have someone hold the brake, Put it in drive, if it doesn't go, go back to neutral and adjust the other end of the cable a full turn down where the cable is Input to the transmissipn. There is a stop type nut that you loosen to turn the adjuster. and do it again. continue until it goes into gear. 1st, second, and third will go together once first id adjusted. you will find reverse will also work once you perform this adjustment. It is like adjusting the cable on a 10 speed bike, no difference. The park lever is a separate cable, and can be adjusted in the same manner. it is a great system. Remember, I'M OLD. I worked on these every day.

If I can help I don't mind, but keep in mind that there are a number of different ones.
There is a pretty descriptive page I'll post about adjustments at the trans if I can find it.

Here it is, about half way down the page they show adjustment procedures.

The pdf at MyMopar "servicing operating controls" so far seems to have the most info. Download the video AND the pdf. You have to read the whole thing, stuff is scattered clear through

Here

Main shift cable adjustment is page 5

Page 25 shows adjustment of the parking cable

Page 28 shows the push button mechanism itself

The ticket to the push button trans is to find one from a 65 B body car and use the slip joint tail shaft to get yourself a u-joint out back! Yes, they're hard to find, so if you see one, pay the price!! That's what I did with my old 64 Belvedere, took the tail shaft from the small block trans of a 65 coronet with a 273 and installed it on my big block 64 pushbutton trans!! Voila, U-joints!!! Geof
