Hey guys long time no see. After a long stretch of not working on my car just driving it and enjoying it I am ready to move on with and start working on it again. Plus this 8 3/4 has been sitting on my bench for almost a year now and I am ready to get going on it. I was going to take it to someone and have them rebuild it but after thinking about it I think I would like to tackle this project myself. Except for the transmission which I had CRT rebuild all other work to my car I have done myself. I kind of like the kick you get when you build something cool, and the pride of saying I did it myself. What I need first is to educate myself about how to rebuild an 8 3/4. Any links or recommendations on books to read would be very useful. Also any comments or complaints from others who have done this would be appreciated as well.

Are either units the POSI Type? Go with the 489 if so...

Here to get you started on the details of the models.

You will need all new bearings, crush sleave, seal etc. Maybe gears if worn and maybe a new ring set if you want a diff ratio than what you have. Also posi parts et depends on model though.

Also torque settings for bolts and ring pinnion depth and pattern are very important if you want it quite and strong. You wont save a huge amount doing it yourself, but I am not saying you should not. You may get a lot of un and learn a lot in the process. good luck to ya!

Either case is good. If you use the 489 replace the crush sleeve with a solid spacer.
