new engine problem

So if I understand this.... It's reading 40 initial and runs fine and the advance works from there (?)

If so that 40 is not really 40. Something is wrong between the balancer mark and the timing tab or something was put together wrong (or both).

I don't believe it has anything to do with the distributor.
 
40 seems like a lot. But, my car idled with 50 degrees timing and now idles with 12, so obviously there is a pretty sizeable range where the car will at least idle?
 
I know you say you verified the mark lines up with the cover... but did you verify the piston is at TDC when the marks line up? If it truly had 40° it should have a hard time starting. Somethin's fishy..
 
Well I tried a third distributor and now I can set timing properly. Hard to believe I have two bad dist but if I put third one in and set intial to 15 I can then mark it and put one of my other two dist in and then it shows 50. Thinking of poss sending one of my dist to fbo and having them recurve it,anyone have opinions on them?
 
Everything they do you can do yourself for under $40 if you care to take the time and know a muffler shop with a welder. Under $20 if you own a Mig.
