Ok this is probably a stupid question but I have ocd and I cant quit thinking and obsessing about it. I have a new 360 fresh rebuilt I haven't started it or broke it in yet. It's basically a mild stock rebuild factory heads kb pistons factory intake and manifolds. Anywho last night I was turning it over by hand while priming the oil to get back to TDC to install my dissy and I noticed an air escaping psssst noise. Sounded like it was from the rear of the engine at first i thought it was just the air being pushed out the exhaust manifolds but the more I think about it the more I worry its air passing the rings! I'm i worring for nothing? What could it be? I thought about doing a compression test just to make sure I didn't screw up the rings but I really don't want to be cranking the engine over before its broken in. Thanks guys

Could be just the oil. I've heard weird noises when priming, and don't forget, you must turn the crank until cam oil holes are aligned to get oil to the respective rocker shafts

Take the spark plugs out.

Old Man and 67 Dart are right on the money. When turning it by hand while priming, you're hearing the oil push air out of empty passages.

It may be passing by the rings slightly. They've not been broken in and seated yet, so it's possible.
So that is a normal thing? It sounded to me like it was coming from the manifolds so but the cylinders are right there and I was thinking it was compression passing the rings and it freaked me out thinking I did something wrong lol. With the plugs outs it don't do it. So I most definitely think it's compression related. This is my first ever engine build and im a nervous wreck over it haha.

Yeah man, don't sweat it. It is probably compression going out the exhaust as well.
