New hemi starter alignment issue

I have a new hemi that was running fine, and after stopping for gas the starter wouldn’t engage the flexplate. I’ve tried new starters and same problem. The only way to get it to engage again is to put one washer between the starter and middle mounting bolt. Moving the starter away from the flexplate. The motor with run fine this way, but I know the starter flexplate teeth aren’t meshing correctly. Anyway run into this before?

What is the rest of the setup based on and what transmission? I know that the ATI starter is the best thing since sliced bread for a third Gen hemi with a 727 or the like, but I'm fairly sure that someone here has had some similar issues.
