New Mufflers

My brother called and he just had new mufflers and tailpipes installed
on the 70 Duster. The guy at the exhaust shop said that my car had
the original pipes on it from manifolds to tail pipes. My car had the
turned down tail pipes being a Calif. car. The shop told my
brother that the exhaust was still in good shape and only needed
mufflers and tails, he also said that 2 1/2 pipes would cause some
clearance problems with the torsion bars? I could'nt figure that one
out. Sound rite to anyone out there? Anyhow, it has new Raven
mufflers and straight out tails, I know its not original but I like straight
out pipes so much better. Some of the guys at the shop were also Mopar
gurus and they gave him a great deal on chrome tips off a 70 Road
Runner!! My brother said it sounds great can't wait too see it and take
it for a spin. They also capped off the heat riser.
 
The old 2.5" wont tale. Funny, Bolth tony and I have 3" pipes. I'd love to open an exhaust shop.
 
I just put a resto 340 exhaust from Accurate LTD on my 70 duster and for some reason the resto and factory had a smaller head pipe on the drivers side exhaust to snake around the starter/torsion bar. Must be some factory engineering thing because theres plenty of room for more.
 
I had 2.5" on my car when it had exhaust manifolds but I think it went smaller right before the driver side manifold.
 
That is where the new resto and factory exhaust is small, from just ahead of the trans cross member to the manifold, on drivers side, its down to 2 inch. The factory even had an area that was pinched down but the guy from Accurate said this isn't needed so they don't do it. The new exhaust system fit perfect.
 
Yup, it actually made a miserable job fun to do. Highly recommended.
 
work at an exhaust shop and i hate when my boss says to a customer that something cant bee done! anything goes if you just have the time and realy want too! but i agree that the original pipes are smaller where they pass the tosionbars, i usuly recomend for low horsepower cars that we make the front pipes in 2 1/4" the first bit and then step up to 2½" after the tosionbars (this is only for the people who wants bigger pipes just for the sound of bigger pipes) if someone actualy has some power then i always want to make the exhaust big from the maifolds... my own car has dual 3" all the way from the headers and it fits great even if i made the exhaust lying in my garage with car on jackstands! its just alittle bit tight betwen the rear framerails and the rear shock absorbers! by the way i like those ravin mufflers!
