Hi Folks

A bit of a rant here..........Shopping for a power steering hose for my '71 Demon.

At a local parts store, the hose is $94 CDN out the door.......

At Rock auto, even with the 40% currency exchange and shipping to my door, the price comes in at $71 CDN.....

Same manufacturer, same part number.

WTF :(
 
I'm happy if my local parts guys can get the parts. I'm ok paying a bit of a premium to get parts faster via my local guy and I'm happy to support the local speedshop so they continue to exist. Something I had to train my NAPA guys to NOT do was substitution. I'd call with a specific manufacturer and part number then show up to pick up my parts only to find out they'd substituted their Chinesium house brand parts. Sometimes I don't mind but there needs to be a dialogue for that to happen.
 
A member not long ago, similar issue, I suggested he go to a hydraulic supply company and get the rubber hose part replaced,
To my surprise said he had, - " Greenline" chain, that they didnt want the "liability" of a "steering issue".
My guys been doing them for years, so I encouraged our member to go elsewhere and not to mention "automotive steering", tell them it's for a custom log splitter or some such.
The fella got the hose done at a different shop, can't remember the $$$, but he seemed happy.
Wasn't long ago .

Rockauto is often the best solution to purchase car parts at a decent price.
Even for us in Europe despite the international air shipping and taxes.
Don't you have taxes to pay in Canada on parts from USA?
Here, 20% of VAT and sometimes 4% customs taxes.
 
I used to go to a truck and trailer shop to have power steering hoses made. Usually got them done while I waited, and far cheaper than NAPA. That was a few years ago, when I worked at an independent shop. You would probably have to bring the old one with you so they could see the shape and length.

The old hose is almost mandatory to get the angles and bends correct, or hose fitment can be very challenging, as mention by missing linc .
 
Unless I need the part right now I go to Rockauto and get part numbers then compare their price to Amazon's.
 
I had a hose made at a local shop, and the only hose with GOODYEAR printed on it, not even close to what it looked like originally, and MUCH thicker, I didn't like it but what am I gonna do?

Yes they do......From what I understand, the hoses are designed specifically in length and shape to the pump application. I think it has something to do with friction loss etc. but I am not sure.

The ends need to be "clocked" right in relation to each other cuz the hoses don't "twist" very well for clearance around various accesories.
I've had to take couple back for adjustment cuz you can't just twist the ends in the hose for alignment.
 
Bought front rotors for the Wife's AWD Challenger GT last week. Napa and Carquest where $249 and $279 Cdn respectively EACH. I bought the SAME rotors at Partssource (and they had stock vs having to wait 11 days that NAPA was going to be) for $109 each! I've always avoided PartSource.. aka Canadian Tire, but no more! Saved me over $260 and had stock same morning.

My other go to has always been Partsmonkey.ca, but they seem to be having less and less available..

Absolute B/S.....I agree. I used to patronize a parts supplier exclusively without shopping since I had an account with them. On one occasion, they didn't have the part I needed so I tried one of their competition to see if it was in stock. They were $100 cheaper right off the street for the EXACT same thing. When I called my supplier, they said that they could match it.......I always figured I got the best price but apparently not.
 
Bought an AMD bumper today. It was cheaper to get it from a US dealer rather than a Canadian dealer.
