I am into the Rock & Roll. I like to listen to WJJK 104.5 out of Indy. I listen to it when i am not listening to my cds full of Rock and Roll, new and old. Also, I listen to channels 6,7, and 14 on my Sirius Sat. Radio.

Here's my breathers, radiator cap, and coolant recovery tank cap that was recently powdercoated by Pheonix Specialty Coatings. I got these back this afternoon.

Those caps are going to look great! But now I think that dipstick handle will look out of place....Looks like it may go south this winter to get coated.

I have EVERYTHING I need to fire this thing up. I'll post more info in another thread.

As for Leanna: SEND HER YOUR BUSSINESS!!!!!!!!!! Good prices, FAST turn around, and some of the most enjoyable conversation you can have with a fellow enthusiast.

I lean toward metal (older metal... this "new metal" is crap for the most part) but when the radio is on as background and it's less convenient to change the station when stuff starts repeating, Classic Rock gets the nod. If I had a garage, it'd be a Classic Rock space. I heart Nights With Alice Cooper. Still other times, I'll go on a classical kick for weeks at a time. I'm weird or something.

I'd guess that the target demographic would be the Classic Rock crowd in early evening. Then again, the shops that I've worked/hung out in were almost always resonating with stuff from the 50s (until the owner left to chase parts and I'd throw in an Anthrax cassette). There could be a bunch of money in the guys spinning wrenches for the 50s nostalgia crowd.

If you are wanting the local area, I think that most of Western KY and TN listen to 100.3 country. So my vote is for country. Although I do listen to the other stations in OUR area I listen to them the most.
If you are looking more for local clients maybe just put an add in the phone book. Not sure. I wish I were doing more powder coating I would use your service.
 
... I think on your website a few more pictures of your work and some testimonials from current and previous customers would be helpful in spreading your message on the internet also. Setting up a small booth at local swap meets with sample work has done wonders for some powder coaters around my area. ... Bobby Dodson


Bobby, thank you soooooo much for your in-depth and valuable post! It was very enlightening and I appreciate the time you devoted to it. (I also want one of those candles for my hot rod. Do they come in lime green?? LOL)

There are photos of every job I've done found in the Gallery section broken down into Automotive Parts, Motorcycle Parts and Miscellaneous. Viewers can either scroll down that page to see all the work samples, click on the Showcase Slideshow (a little 3-minute video with highlights of some of what I think is my nicest work), or choose to see EVERYTHING through PhotoBucket (including work samples, before and after photos, personnel, our mascots Sox and Martin, our cars, pictures of the facility, etc.).

There are also two "Before & After Slide Shows," also through PhotoBucket, showing what parts looked like when they arrived and after I was done with them.

As far as the customer testimonials go, there's an entire page of them; it's the "PSC Feedback" tab, and all but one of the photos on that page will automatically turn into "before" pictures if you roll your mouse over them. The only one that doesn't change is the photo submitted by MeMike of his intake sitting on the seat of his truck. It was just too fun not to include!!!

Above all, I want to give people choices and lots of information when they look at my website, but if it isn't clear or easy to understand it defeats my purpose and may be doing more harm than good. Any and all suggestions are taken into consideration, appropriate changes are always being made, and I'm working on it all the time to make it better for YOU ... because without you, I wouldn't be here doing what I love to do best.

Leanna, I agree with many of the other posts regarding your "Target" audience. Baby Boomers who are now buying and restoring the cars and bikes they had....... or wanted to own when they were younger.

You have a very friendly and positive attitude and are doing a fine job of marketing..........unfortunately the economy sucks. Just hang in there and continue to weather this "perfect" storm. It too shall pass.

Just my opinion.....I don't know if I'd spend any $$ on radio advertising locally. From reading your posts, the locals are not your target audience.

Oh, and a vote for Classic Rock here........and talk radio.

I vote rock an roll. BUT I believe you should pay close attention to the people who respond in/around YOUR 50-100 mile radius (if your concerned with LOCAL business),,, you know your area, best. Maybe do a survey at the local car shows, asking the same question. Or an ad in some of the major auto rags, or hand outs at the major car shows. Talk with some of the major venders, an ask them to include one of your hand-outs in they're sales, if you want to expand beyond local sales.
 
Have you looked into a small spot in Mopar Muscle or one of the other auto enthusiasts monthly mags? It might be a bit more money but your target audience would be there.
 
If its music, I listen to it. From rock to country to rap to classical & everything in between. I love music, no matter what it is.
If your wanting to reach people, find the stations that are 100K watts. They usally have the greater ammount of listeners.

I personally can't stand the radio and the over commercialization it brings. I prefer to listen to Wxpn, a U-PENN college station. You can hear Black Sabbath then hear the Gourds the next song and of course the World Cafe always is refreshing.

HemiPar, you're very right about country music being the mainstay around here.

I've had a little ad in the phone book since August of last year and haven't had a single customer as a result of it. (I know this because I've tracked referrals since Day One.) Except for one kid -- with a Pepto Pink S-10 -- who was at Greenfield's 19th Annual Fire Prevention Festival's "car show" [what a joke!] last October, all of the locals that I've done work for picked up one of my cards from local businesses (a Mexican restaurant, convenience stores, the grocery store, etc.) where I regularly leave them.

CudaCollins, you make some valid points as well. The problem is there aren't any local car shows to speak of, or even swap meets. I live in the boonies and they're all farmers!!! LOL It's not "expanding beyond local sales" that I'm trying to accomplish. The internet -- and you FABO and BOG guys -- are my best friends! 99.8% of all my customers to date have been from anywhere EXCEPT here.

I've been donating Gift Certificates (along with flyers and biz cards) to various car shows all over the country for fifteen months now. There's a big list of them on the home page of my website. ONE GUY turned one in so far, just last week, from the Dave & Ed's Auto Events Spring Show in Canfield, Ohio. (He doesn't own a computer so he's never even seen any of my work.)

As funds permit, you'll all start to see my ads in the Mopar rags and [gasp!] probably some Chevy and Ford magazines too. The only paid advertising I've ever done was through streetrodding.com, a seemingly good ol' boys' network that's resulted in one customer last December (who I did over $500 worth of work for, picked up his parts and paid me with a bad check). I'm not too inclined to renew that fiasco next month when it expires.

I've talked with another vendor here on FABO about doing some powder coated parts for them to sell ... we even developed a poll for you all to answer to test the waters and see if there was any interest in the venture. It didn't even get a reply (my fault, because my poll had more than one question and there's no way to do a multi-question poll on here). I'm still trying to figure out an easy way to do it so stay tuned for that.
 
I've heard nothing but good about the quality of your companys work. I believe you have a excellent "business mind" about you. I think your doing all the right things. Word of mouth is your best advertiser !! And as far as drawing new customers in right now, I believe the economy has alot to do with people letting go of the all mighty dollar right now.
A good economy, = a good car hobby and everything that goes with it. Just ask any new car dealer right now..
Like I said previously, Word of mouth is your best advertiser. Oh yeah , I've got a few things to get coated, just not ready yet, BUT you've got my business !

leann,,, im sure you have searched the other brand of car web sites,,try soem of the import sites,, those guys i think spend more money on BLING,, then guys restoring,,,look around for a bike/chopper shop,,they powder coat all the time,,frames,,etc,,sounds like you need a bigger oven to attract more busniess,,,i seen the posting about the slant 6 valve cover,,go to the closet drag strip and drop some flyers,,cruise nites,,local auto parts stores,,

i agree with the fastfish ...bike shops do a lot more coating than the car guys do

maybe the group here would be willing to collect e-mail addys from places in there own areas for you ? just a thought , but its free !
 
I know all about how hard it is to get your name out there.

I'm a small business owner and I have found that word of mouth referrals is the absolute best way to advertize.

Now the fact that your community has a small demand for this work is gonna be tough so you may need to concentrate your efforts on car magazines like Mopar glamour guide, and other gear head publications.

Radio advertizing is extremely expensive and to try to nail the perfect target audience in your neck of the woods may be A/M talk radio since so many people are listening to talk radio now days more than ever.

I'm 37 y/o and grew up with 70's-80's rock as my predominant desired music, but i listen to talk radio while I'm driving from job to job in the morning, then on the ride home pop in some DIO or Rush to jam to while stuck in traffic because heavy traffic and Sean Hannity's rants get me so worked up that i'm ready to run everyone off the road and leave them in a flaming pile of burnt metal...ahhhhhh, nothing like some Holy Diver to give you your game face for the ride home.

Back to the subject, I'd say keep doing what you're doing but forget the expensive radio ads and concentrate on craigslist ad's out the wazoo all over to target a broad audience in many states, and offer things nobody else does and make sure your ad says so!!!!!
Customers like to use the one business that stands out from the others.
make your ad pop out and grab them with the offer they can't refuse.

Get creative, and spend at least one hour a day advertizing on the web and checking the competition.

Get some customers to give you raving reviews on car related chat sites, kudzu.com, which has helped me pick up a little business.

You can also do the pay per click website deals where you can have target audiences driven to your website by using certain keywords.
You pay for every click, but one out of say every four or five people that click may use you.

Make sure your prices are competitive, and make sure you treat EVERYONE the same, and treat them right which I know you do anyways.

You may want to get some reviews on German car websites such as www.mercedesshop.com or some BMW or tuner car websites.

When people see tons of reviews, they call you.

I give every one of my customers a flyer with a couple websites that they can write a review for me on, and I've got alot of business from the mercedes websites from that alone.

ask every customer you have had so far to write you reviews on kudzu.com, and whatever other review forums, and car related forums you can think of.

The more web crawlers that see your business name, the more you will pop up in google searches too.
You can also pay into google ads as well to put your name up on the list higher.

I personally don't do that because word of mouth has been my best avenue and I've found that paid advertizing just really does not work for me.

I have even put ads in bellsouth yellowpages and got maybe one or two price checking calls a year so the internet is a much better avenue than the phone book now days.

One other thing.
No matter how good the customer thinks your business is by what they hear from others or from ads, make sure you reflect that in your phone converation because a crappy or short attitude on the phone make hurt you much more than you could imagine.
remember the internet goes both ways, and bad news travels much faster than good so don't give anyone an excuse to bash your company.

Also remember that you cannot please everyone and if you do get a bad review somewhere, make sure you reply and tell your side of the story so customers can see you care and are willing to stand up to ridicule.

It looks like you have a product that users will vouch for, do you really think that your customer can be reached by the broad brush spread by radio? Radio is a tough medium to tackle for your kind of business. Radio and TV are super expensive - unless you can find a regional motorsports show to buy. If you buy radio be very selective of the shows you buy to be sure they are within your target customer.

Utilize your existing customer base to help spread the word, use online internet forums, online magazines, create a color flyer and distribute them at local car shows where your potential customers would be looking for your company services. Rent a booth, put up an Easy-up at a few car large regional car shows to gauge the reaction to your product and offer show specials.

The cost of Radio is much better spent targeted more directly, radio will be heard by your family and friends and probably miss your potential customer.

I spent thirty years in TV and Radio commercials, there are better, less expensive and more direct ways to get your word out!

After just a few days of conducting this 30-day poll and reading all the great replies and wonderful suggestions for improvement, I've reached the conclusion that my very limited advertising bucks will be better spent on an ad or two in car magazines than thrown at a broadcasting company.

Just to clear up any confusion and save you all a bunch of typing ...

I live out in the boonies 130 miles from Memphis, 140 miles from Nashville, and almost 250 miles from St. Louis.

My daily driver is a 1983 D150 pickup with a 360 that gets about 8 gallons to the mile so I obviously don't travel much at $4.00 a gallon.

There is ONE CAR SHOW a year here every October in my immediate vicinity, and it's not even a car show per se ... it's the Annual Fire Prevention Festival (i.e., a bunch of firemen and their trucks) and they have a little car show in conjunction with it. Last October, it had 17 entrants and only 3 of them were what I would call show worthy. A 1999 Chevy Celebrity -- 4 door no less -- took home a friggin trophy!!! It's more of a bad joke than a car show in my opinion. (One of the attendees was the kid I mentioned in an earlier post with his Pepto Pink late model S-10 ... I coated gauge bezels from a 1959 Impala that he wanted to install in it. He was my only customer from the show. One other customer in June was a referral from another attendee who has a beautiful 1971 Challenger, the car I really wanted to work on. He promised me some work back then but I have yet to hear from him.)

I have color flyers (and/or 4x6 color postcards -- see the photo attached) hanging up in every window that will have one, including the three auto parts stores and every auto- and bike-related business within forty miles. If they have a flyer or card in their window, I make sure they have a nice stack of business cards to go with it.

There's an entire page on my website devoted to customer feedback ("PSC Feedback") ... not surprisingly, most of the comments on it are from FABO members. :love7: In case you might've forgotten, I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!

I have ads on every "free" medium I can think of (Craig's Lists, Click2City.com, motortopia.com, my racingjunk.com profile, etc.) and am constantly searching out more. CudaSpaz, thanks for the kudzu.com idea -- that's one I've never heard of. If any of you are inclined to write something up, I'd be forever in your debt. (FYI: I have a memory like an elephant and if I get referrals from anyone who passes out cards or helps promote my business in any way, I WILL reflect that on your own powder coating bill whenever the time comes to get your own stuff done. Though it was recommended earlier to treat everyone the same, I DO try to take care of my pals.)

FastFish66, you're right -- I DO need a bigger oven. Of course, bigger ovens aren't free (or even cheap) so when finances permit, believe me, I WILL be upgrading my curing equipment to be able to do k-members, leaf springs, rear ends, blocks, etc. I've even considered getting a loan to buy one, but if business is so slow on small stuff that I can't even pay my bills, the last thing I want to do is incur more debt. I've been trying to set aside ten percent of every job to buy one, but in this economy even that's tough to do.

Thanks again for everything gang! I've said it before but I'll say it again ... I couldn't do what I love to do without you, and I appreciate each and every one of you!!! Keep those suggestions and ideas for improvement coming. Rest assured, I'll consider them all.
 
Wow... I FABO searched "fiberglass racing buckets", ended here... This thread is OLD,I still like my 70's/80's rock/metal era... In my area ,the new releases ,get no love. The best one,is Alice Cooper s nightly gig.(to my ears).
 
I'ma 80 hair metal band lover, bands in this order: Metallica, Ozzy (him and Black Sabbath), AC/DC, Megadeth...Just then it gets crazy, a few new bands in there, but they are following a lot of the 80 Metal bands so.....

Leanna, I hope your doing well in the coating business, its a hard knock life out there being a business owner these days specially when the taxes you pay in are almost as much as you use to pay bills, in some cases, even more then you "take home"...... IO know it sucks I used to do that battle ALL the time.
 
good morning, I traded work for air time (3 spots a day, 30second each) on the radio for a month.
they've put a value of $6000. for those adds. I traded 3 vehicles lettered up with their logo.
Their vehicles are still running around the city after 5 years.....
unless they came come up with an add show your great work thru the radio, but i'd look
for another way to promote. Good luck
