I kind of have an odd problem. I recently installed an intellatronix digital cluster. Everything seem to be working fine except the speedometer was erratic. I sent it back to be repaired and when I received it back, reinstalled it and had no spark. Through an exhaustive diagnosis process. I inadvertently left the tach wire off my coil and the vehicle started and I had spark. As soon as I reattach the tach wire, the car died and would not restart. After removing the tach wire again, I regained spark and the ignition system operates normally. The cluster is currently on its way back to Intellitronix for further repairs. I am beyond the point of no return of reinstalling the original instrument cluster as the bezel needs to be modified for it to fit. Does anyone have any insight as to what my issue might be? Would I be better off making a custom instrument cluster from individual gauges? Or perhaps purchasing a custom unit from classic industries or summit or something like that?

That was my thought as well. It must have happened on the initial round of repairs on the cluster. Hopefully they can sort it out. If not I'll be requesting a refund to offset some of the cost of different style unit from another company

There are also electronics in the tach itself that can fail and effectively short the tach signal.

I've had, years ago, a Rac tach fail and do that, and two other guys I've known over the years (I'm 76) have had similar failures with other tachs. These were not a simple short of the signal wire, but a problem within the tach

Tach is integrated in the cluster. I like the design but may have to go with a different cluster from another company.

The tach has be compatible with the ign system. Some ign systems like CD [ MSD 6 ] rarely work with tachs without an adapter. If you are using an aftermarket ign system, it might need a filter/amplifier to work with the new tach.

Also, with MSD system, you must never wire a tach to the coil directly. The box has its own output. What ignition are you using?

That's the thing....it's a factory ignition just a coil, ballast resistor, ECM and distributor. And all components are new.

Ok, probably just had the tach fail and short its input to ground, or less likely, 12 volts.

"...as the bezel needs to be modified for it to fit."
I'm installing one of these. Did you have to modify the Intellitronix assembly to make it fit between the headlight switch and the wiper switch? How did you mount the two switches?

Please email me directly at [email protected] and I can furnish you with instructions on mods I made as I need to disassemble mine to figure out exactly what I did.
