For those of you who responded or read my posts earlier when I was trying to start my 66, you may recall I posted that I had it running.
Well - two days later it was back to no start. I rechecked everything twice, coil voltages, continuity tests, wiring, ballast, ignition boxes (ecu), dist pickup - no joy !
Keep in mind I have three ecu's which all test good, two used, one new mopar orange box.
Yesterday I decided okay the only thing left is the pickup in the dist. changed it out - no dice.
I throw my hands up - so I run down to autozone and buy a no name ecu, and a blaster coil thinking these are the only items left.
I stick the ecu in - bam its running. WTH ? All my other ecu's checked good, now this cheap parts store unit was the solution ? Damn it.
Returned the blaster.
I promptly threw the other ecu's I had as hard as I could at the cement sidewalk, and then in the trash. I would throw the ignition tester on the floor too but its my buddies.
BTW the car is not overheating now either, I suspect through my own combination of threatening and coersion that the car even started earlier in the week. I suspect the reason it overheated at that time was due to weak spark, much like retarded timing.
So, the bottom line ?
1) I know I had read that mopar orange boxes are junk - that I can confirm for certain. Shame on chrysler for selling such a piece of crap - mopar performance - indeed. :angry1:
2) Never rely on the results of a black box tester. :thefinge:
3) Always carry a spare new ecu that you have checked as a good piece on a running setup. :evil5:
As an aside - my buddy calls me late yesterday to ask about an ignition question on his 65 monaco. His old orange box died and when he installed a new orange box today it ran then it quit. I told him to go down to the parts store and get an off the shelf generic replacement and try that, after relating my experience of the last 1.5 weeks.
At least I can relax and focus on something more productive now, like getting the car mobile.
PEACE -
