Not an A body. A fun Dakota build

-
Dakotas are fun little trucks, I have had 3 of them.
And they are pretty cheap now.

The last one I bought was $200, v8 auto. My nephew went with me to pick it up, and claimed it for himself.
He cleaned it up, dumped a can of fresh gas, new battery and it fired up and idled. Good first vehicle for a 16 year old kid.

The one before that, a co-worker had one, drove it over to my house signed the title, and gave it to me.
V6 auto
The engine had a miss, burnt exhaust valve, I fixed the head, put a new steering rack on it and 4 new tires.
Gave it to my youngest daughter for her first vehicle. I had $325 in the whole truck.
Shhhh. Keep it on the down low.

Took the oil pan off. Like to know what kind of oil this guy used.

Sure looks like you got lucky on a reman engine. Score!!!!!
So you think it's a reman? What leads you to believe that? I have no experience with remanufactured engines or Magnums for that matter. I bought it from the junkyard as an original 90k mile factory engine. But what do I know?

I have had pans off some low mile Mags. No markings like those. It don't matter anyway. You have a hell of a nice engine there!!

Magnums are famous for being super clean inside.

However, I've heard of lurking rod bearing issues.

I'd check.

That motor has to be a rebuilt... it's just WAY too clean, i mean i thought my motor was clean inside but it's a pig that was left in a smoke stack for 20 years compared to that thing.. what a find :)

The crosshatch is too perfect for 90k miles, there is almost no scuffing on the piston skirt, it's TOO clean... the paint numbers on the rods to keep track of them, the factory wouldn't do that... you got a big win in that motor :)

Really, the factory didn't use paint pens? I wondered about that. Does seem odd............
Thanks for sharing your real world experience.

Man, I'm really curious now. Looking forward to pulling the heads and see what that end looks like.

Unless you are replacing the heads, i wouldn't.... honestly i doubt that motor has more than a few hundred miles on it.. My guess is they had it rebuilt and someone messed up the install causing the fire after a short time. What i would do is look in the spark plug holes.. i bet there is zero carbon on the pistons at all..

No, going to run the factory heads. But we are going to cam and valve spring swap it.
Definitly look down thru the sp holes first. Thanks!

ah ok cool.. i'm a bit jealous.. finding a 360 near me right now is crazy.. guys want 500+ for stuff that is just nasty

Magnums are "famous" for having nearly perfect cross hatch patterns after 100,000 miles or more.

yup, mine looks good also but not like that.. that looks super fresh at least to me.. also the skirt of that piston is nearly perfect. That's why i was wondering if they have any carbon at all on top :)

Can you swap the nose to a '91-96 nose? I've heard a v8 swap on the earlier body is tough with the flat nose making the radiator and accessories a pain. I guess the Shelkby Dak's came with some "one off" parts to make it work?

Not saying it isn't possible to v8 swap yours, just curious if the later nose could be swapped to make it easier. Asking for a friend. :D

Shelby's had no belt driven fan.

Front clip could be swapped, yes. Easier to run a Magnum with an electric fan. Fits fine.
Been done a bunch:
1987 Dodge Dakota 5.9 swap with a NV3500
