I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab (4.7l ). I was bummed out to find that it can only tow 4700 lbs. (towing wasn't on my priority list when I bought it) I have been shopping for travel trailers and finding one with a gvw of less than 5000 is difficult. The uvw of a lot of 'em are in the 4000 lb range, but I don't want to push it...

Anyone know how to increase the tow capacity? The only upgrade I've done on my truck is a magna flow exhaust - nothin else. Truck runs strong and has no issues- can't believe it tops out at 4700!!!
 
Check on weight distributing hitches. I don't know how much that would help, but I know they add to the total towing capacity. Also check overload or helper springs. If you're gonna try to increase the towing capacity, make sure you have a good external trans cooler. I personally think every truck should come with a trans temp gauge. I'd like to put one on my Ram one of these days, when I can quit spending on the Dart. That may increase your capacity by 500 - 1000lbs. But I guess your mileage may vary.
 
that will change how easy it is to tow not the total towing capacity if im not mistaken. springs or hd air bags can add to the total weight capacity. personaly just for the safety aspect of towing bigger brakes,trans,motor, stuff like that with a bigger truck would be a better option but not in the monitary part. depending on what trailer you are going to look for is heavily influenced by how big your truck is and how much it can tow.
 
Thanks fellas, appreciate the input and advise. I'll probably just have to look at some other options or trade my wifes Xterra in for something bigger!!!
 
I have the exact same truck and I would be afraid to pull anything over the weight of the truck. It is a little lighter than a full size truck and quite a bit narrower. Pulling something isn't the problem stopping is the problem.
