not getting gas from tank i think???

Put new tank on my 67 dart. Used old sending unit it was still good. Intsalled no prob. But when i went to start the car it ran then ran out of gas in the line. I rechecked sending unit its correct i have a peice of rubber hose between tank and steel line two inches worth checked its good not collapsed.
Then started turning it over and i know fuels going in the line because i checked again and when i loosed the clamp on the rubber line near hose on tank it started leaking.
If it was run dry dioes it take alot of cranking to fill that line from tank to pump again? Any suggestions pump is new.
 
Did that and no gas came through the line I will pull the unit again. I know the line from tank to car is good I ran the engine from there when tank was out. I am thinking it must be the filter I put on the end of the fuel sending unit just a screen and the fuel line between sending unit and steel line are only things new.
