Oem 5.9 Magnum Rods Forged?

Hi Guys,

can someone tell me if stock magnum rods are forged?

read an article where the early viper and 5.9 magnum shared a rod...are they forged?

Later Viper are powdered. I worked on a 05 SRT10 truck. It had powder rods. The Mag V8 are all forged. The Viper rods are a little longer.
 
Even the PM rods are forged...just not drop forged.

Stock rods will live a long time in most any application.
 
Sorry, but powdered metal cannot be forged.
The powder is forged under tens of thousands of pounds of pressure... I used to load at a GKN plant in PA... Those big forging presses were not there for their looks.

True they are not "drop forged" but forged none the less.
 
Forging is the legacy process, starting with a billet of steel formed into a shape by applying pressure with either a hammer or press. Metals can be forged “cold” or “hot” with the process chosen based on complexity of the part, how close to finish size the part must be after forging and the number of parts being produced.

In contrast, powder metallurgy is a newer process, with mass production of PM products beginning in the mid- 20th century. Powdered metal starts with a fine metallic powder consisting of iron compounds and carbon. This powder is combined with other alloying agents such as copper or nickel and frequently a binding agent that helps hold it together after being pressed into a mold and then heated or sintered to fuse all the materials together. During sintering, the binding agent burns off, leaving just the alloying agents in a homogeneous condition in the form of the desired piece.

After the sintering process the rods are forged in a hydraulic press.
 
I stand corrected. That is certainly interesting. I used to deal with a powdered metal company and all that was done is compress the powder under a lot of pressure and then sinter. Forging wasn’t part of their process. Learn something new every day!
