Got a motor out of the dodge van. Put all new parts and new seals and brand oil pan. We put the motor in and when we put oil into it started to leak from the bottom of the motor where it meets the tranny. I'm a little unsure what it is.

my money would be on the rear main seal

dumb question...are you sure you are using the right oil pan?
not trying to match 340/360/LA/magnum parts?

the napa i got my 360 pan from recognized it this year, shipped from ontario to bc, 113 canadian

So stupid question whats the difference in the oil pans? It bolted on just fine when i put it together.

the 318/340 pan take a much larger rear seal then the 360...so yes it will fit real easy...and have a big gap for the oil escape..

The 273-318-340 oil pans take the same seal front and rear...

The 360 has a unique rear seal that nests into the rear main cap, the front pan seal is the same as the 273-318-340 from 70 and later...

Just because it fits, doesn't mean it's right....

So can i replace the rear main seal or do i need a whole new oil pan?
you have the wrong oil pan brother

your rear main seal is probably good, because it was the right one for the 360 engine wasn't it?

so get a new pan, and get a oilpan gasket kit for a 360 and you should be frying tires in no time

How many times? You need a 360 oil pan.

If it were mine I'd probably just continue to run a total loss oiling system. It'd keep the bottom of my car from rusting.

I wonder if you getting confused with where the rear main seal goes
when you pulled the back most main cap off, there was a 2 piece seal in there
one piece went into the block ,around the crank, the other piece went into the cap (on the INSIDE, where the bearing is aswell)
that is the rear main seal
then when you installed your oil pan you used a 2 piece seal, two pieces that laid flat on the rail of the block and two round ones
the round one that lays on the OUTSIDE of the rear main cap is NOT your rear main seal, it is your oil pan seal

I got an oil pan for a 318. NAPA doesnt recognize the 360 for the dart.
on these old cars you have to know what you have. Just because vatozone does not recognize your combo means that you have to buy the wrong pan.
Good example, I have a 32 ford truck with a 350 Chevy in it. Do I buy a pan for a 32 ford truck? Or a pan for a 350 Chevy

There used to be a sign in one of the parts stores that I used to frequent that said:

Wrong information will get you the wrong part every time....

Will i learned something new today. Thanks guys got a 360 oil pan ordered yesterday. Appreciate the help.

best way to learn is to screw it up once
kind of like the best way to remember your wifes birthday is to forget it...just once is all it takes

you'd be surprised how many of us keep lists of what parts came from what car just so we know what to ask for when we do need something

I'm running a 76 360 in my 71 duster, with a rear end from a 68 dart
if I need from brake parts, I need them for "a 71 duster"
if I need rear brake parts, I need them for "a 68 dart"

you just got to keep track of what section your working on
