Hi guys, my friend baffled my stock 360 pan, and along with windage tray, I thought I was cool. After reading another freinds mopar "stroker" book, I read that I may be loosing as much as 42 hp by not using aftermarket deeper sump oil pan. I really dont know, does anyone out there have any feedback? Thanks, Mike

Build dependent.........Yes.

The deeper pan moves the oil away from the crank so splash is a non-issue at all. If your drag racing in a modest manor, (Non-pro like) You could add a little depth to the pan. The baffles are great to have in a stock pan, hot rod engine or not.

Also, if your sucking up all the oil in a stock pan on launch or mid track, do not add a quart of oil.
If you add a quart to the stock pan, it'll take time for the oil to get sucked up and clear the spining crank. So don't add a quart to the stock pan, switch to a deep pan.

Should you ever have the pan down again, notice how deep the crank runs into the pan vs 4 quarts in the pan. This should help give you an idea of how deep you need to modify the pan if you do it on your own or in the purchase of another pan.
Careful on ground clearance.

Rumblfish, thanks for reply. I'm just now starting to assemble motor, so pan is NOT installed. I spent to much money, so trying to do some things on cheap. My conscience tells me too get better pan, but wallet ignores it!

The 42 hp can be gained,as long as you have a 1300HP pro stock engine, and not a bracket motor. In real life, for us people that run a 4-500hp motor, you will get 7-15HP gain if you run the motor over 6500RPM,and this is in the mopar bible. So if you are not, have a beer and don,t believe every thing that is written in books,or what motor it was on.If you made 42HP by adding this, then they are saying that the baffling is worth just as much as a set of ported heads, think about it?Mrmopartech

i'd be interested in the books explanation on losing
42 hp. to an oil pan.
with a windage tray,crank stripper,and proper
oil pressure, oil control should be fine.
there are other things that can be done,
but are mostly used in purpose built engines.
marine,aviation,drag,nascar
you can get more bang for your by port matching,
rollerizing and lighting your valve train.
a good ignition system set up right will build
more power than about any other mod. if
you have a well built engine.

A good windage tray (Milodon) will help you get 5-15 HP by directing the oil away from the crank and into the pan. If you're worried about not having a large enough pan to the point that you're robbing the oil pump during hard acceleration, you can use an analog (needle) pressure guage to watch your actual oil pressure during your next hard run down the strip. If you do go to a larger oil pan obviously you'll have to extend your pickup and doing this while your engine is upside down on the stand is the easiest and best time to make the change.

Thanks, guys for your responces. I'm not a full-on race prep type mechanic, with years of experience, so I appreciate your input. Seems like I'll probably just use stock baffled pan. Mike
PS for the book title and author, pm me.

if i bolted on
all the hp promises in a parts magazine,
i should get 100 mpg and run in the 4 sec. range
with my dart. the only truth is a well planned and
executed system with adequate cash invested will
yield an above average result.
in the end sitting on your wallet and smashing the
the gas pedal to the floor will tell you if you did good. :thumblef:

i agree with everybody i think that you will be fine just sticking with the stock pan and having it baffled because if you baffle it and windage tray it you are still keeping the crank out of the oil as much as possible you just dont have the deeper pan..but you really dont need one unless yo uhave a high vollume oil pump..that is the only reason that i went with one..rather then stock..but hey if you want the deeper pan and save some money and have some welding skills take a stock pan and make your own..its pretty simple i have done it before..then you would have the milidon look with out the milidon price..paint it black you would probably never no the diffrence
