Oil pump drive shaft and gear installation?

So I've mistakenly Prime my motor with the intake manifold bolted on now I got to somehow get the oil pump drive gear installed. When I try to put it in the hydraulics in the pump push back. So I had to pull it back out, but it got stuck and it took me about half an hour to get the thing back out. Now I am left scratching my head. Do I have to take the intake manifold off before I do this any ideas?

It should go in the tower bushing installed and burnished right?

Depends on which bushing was used. If it's "MOST" aftermarket bushings, they are sized so when they are installed they don't require burnishing. If it's the Chrysler bushing or "a few" of the aftermarket bushings, it will need sizing with the burnishing tool. He's just gonna have to try it and see.

@Bronze Barracuda, doesn't the gear fit through the hole in the intake? Then if the bushing is sized right, it should be a drop in.

Yes the gear fits through the hole. I did put some thick prelude good on the oil pump gear drive shaft. So after I got it out I gave it a good wipe down, sprayed it with some Moovit and pushed it into a bare 318 block. It did go in better. But it still had a little resistance, so I grabbed a different shaft I had lying around and it was a little easier to install. I think I'll spray the different oil shaft with light lubricant like Moovit or PB blaster and see if it falls into place.

I've got the motor at #1 TDC on the compression stroke, so I am attempting to align the pump shaft/ distributor gear so it is facing towards cylinder #1.
Just drop it in and rotate as it makes contact with cam gear?

Purdy much yes. It sounds like you need to size the bushing with the burnishing tool.

Second attempt I used a different drive gear/shaft. Just sprayed some Moovit on and a few drops of motor oil. It easily fell into place.

Don't use a thick assembly lube like Driven on the shaft, I guess it's a little too thick? IDK?
Regardless it's in anyway. :thumbsup:

If I see what I think I see, and you are at TDC1, you're off 1 tooth "by the book". should be 1 more tooth clockwise, as facing slightly more forward.

I was curious.
It does seem to be pointing between cylinder 1 and 3.
So I assume the issue would be that the distributor won't be in the most desirable position?
But it should still work, correct?
 
The slot needs to point to the very front intake manifold bolt on the driver's side, according to the book. I like following that procedure, because it allows for the most distributor movement with the vacuum advance.
 
That looks about right. Are you 100% SURE that thing is seated all the way down? It looks like it's standin a little tall to me.
 
Ok did you back it up some? I always do and lightly tap the gear too, to assure it's ALL the way down engaging the oil pump. Sometimes, the shaft doesn't align with the oil pump. That was my concern. But of course, when you go to install the distributor, you'll know!

Definitely makes sense.
You betcha I backed her up a wee bit gave a tap with the handle of a wooden mallet, then spun a complete rotation. She appears ready for the distributor. I may be taking this to a local shop that my dad and his racing buddies have know for decades, to put it on their engine dyno.
Not to sure yet but if I do I'll post a video.
Hoping for 300 HP.
She's a pretty mild build.
