After spending most of the day in the junkyard yesterday pulling this transmission from a Dakota, I find this where the starter nose goes when I'm cleaning it up. Big deal, or not so much?

I would clean that up so the starter goes in, and dress/ grind away anything that looks like it might crack or fall off, and RUN it!!!

By the way what trans is that? If it's a v6/v8 say, NV3500, could you post a couple of photos of the TO bearing/ fork/ slave setup?

Looks like it has a bunch of other cracks too. Look at bottmn LH corner of the photo. Also, one crack looks like it starts at about 6:00 on the starter boss and extends down to the right where that group of cracks is.

67Dart, It is a 42RH, if the yard wasn't so far away, I would go get some photos of the master/slave for you, there was one there.
69 340, your post made me go look closer. I think those are just dirt marks on the aluminum casting.
Here is a different shot of the damage.

The "big force" against that is up, down, and to the right on the photo. When the starter is cranking, the gear is trying to get AWAY from the flywheel. I would grind all that cracked stuff away so it doesn't crack further and so nothing breaks off and RUN it!!!

Thank you for your replies. I think it looks like somebody was having a hard time putting a replacement starter in and tried beating it in or something.

I have seen a couple like that. I believe it comes from one of two things. Either the starter being left or working loose and walking around while engaged, or being drawn in at an angle by the bolts or nuts. Blend the damaged bits out, use a lightweight mini starter and be sure the bolts are tight and not thread bound. It will be fine.
