Hey guys,
Im pretty set on a candy red color for my 71 dart with black top and bumble bee stripe! Am i making a mistake with the candy red. Anyone seen one like that and did it look BAD @$$??? Im thinking its gonna be right on the money in my mind. I LOVE RED

A true "candy" paint is pretty difficult to paint......every mistake shows up and fixing them is nearly impossible because the paint is so transparent.

It is all about who is spraying it, a lot of experience pays off with Candy's (and $$$)......

A red/black two tone would be cool.....what color for the bumble stripe??

True candy red is a gold base coat, red midcoat, and then clear, some forlks add a very fine gold pearl ontop of the red too, kinda makes it pop a litlle more. You gonna do the spraying yourself?Got a pick of the color your talking about?

Yeah Im planing on doing everything myself. Ive done body work for a long time and Ive sprayed a few cars too. Never any kandy though so its going to be interesting how it turns out... LOL If it turns out blotchy I guess Ill just have to start over. I was thinking a black stripe under the candy to be a lil different, I dunno though might just buy a stick on. Check out house of kolor's kandy apple red and brandywine.. Cant make my mind up. My wife diggs the darker but you can change that by what base you put under it. Im leaning on the brandywine though. I work offshore and @ work right now. When i get home im pullin the motor ( allready have the interior gutted ) and Im gonna paint the interior and engine compartment... Gotta finish up some filler work on the body hopefully I can have it primed and blocked this time in...

Candy Brandywine is a gorgeous colour, but like mentioned above, its tricky to paint.
We've got a 54 Corvette in the shop done in Candy Branywine by another shop - its got some pretty noticeable tiger stripes down the decklid and none of the edges are evenly coated.
We have to redo it for the owner. I've painting for 20 some years and even still I get nervous doing candies. Everything has to be perfect, especially your spray techniques, fluid tip and gun pattern.

But, it is a beautiful colour.

I think that would look god on your car, but as others have said Candy id a hard one to lay. I watched a guy who had painted it before spay a Covette and then watched him color sand for about a month tho make it right. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

I like red too.
Rally Red !! I have painted a couple dozen cars #-o
and I sure would not wan't to try a candy paint.
But that don't mean it can't be dun.:book:

Hope all go's well

Man i know... I had a truck that was porsch red and that was one fine *** color. Deep blood red at night and in the sun almost looked orange. I dunno man Red to me just jumps out and slaps the piss out of ya!!!! LOL I really want to do it candy though... I think what Ill do is buy a quart or to and do the engine bay and interior and see how it turns out!!!!!!

If you like the color you pick for your car then you haven`t made a mistake, even if no one else likes it. The important thing is that you like it. IMHO a good CA paint job will make any car look great. Personally I like Candy Apple paint over a gold base.

What about the black stripe ??? Stick on or painted under the candy???? Maybe some kind of black pearl under the kandy I dunno.. I was kinda wanting something different

You already know what you're in for with a candy. I work in a paint store and try to steer people away from the candy's, just for the repairability. Alot of the new cars are tri-coats from the factory. With some looking you should be able to find a base/clear that looks very close to a candy. One that comesto mind is Merlot Pearl on a Nissan. As far as the stripe how about "ghosting" it on????? Adding black to the color or just a pearl midcoat???? Then bury it with clear........

whatch out using pearl in black!! nasty.8)

some times it looks brown

Well, coming from a guy who has mostly only done custom paint jobs all my life, lol, any ways,on your lastafter your last full coat of gold base, tack it off real good. Then turn your pattern on your gun wide open, turn the air pressure up some, and fog some gold on while keeping the gun about 2 foot from the painted surface. If your not sure about tiger stripes, get some clear sealer,or mid coat clear from hok,so you can really see whats ya got.If its good to go,continue with the red.If its allstriped up,fog some more on.It will take a lot of fogging to get too much build up,but dont tack the surface after the fogging,it can cause streaks.Good luck

I wish someone could tell me a lil bit about the candy Houseof kolor carries... They have a candy in their shimirin line and everything I have been reading about it I dont think its like a traditional candy i think it lays down a lil easier and is easier to fix if you have a misshap or hit something like im prone to do!! LOL they have 2-3 different candies some input would be nice http://www.tcpglobal.com/hokpaint/hokkbcbase.aspx check it out tell me whatcha think the tech sheet has some info too,,,,

i think i got some b4 pics

I'm a huge fan of candy on customs and street rods but lean toward the traditional when it comes to restos and drivers. All depends on your objective. If its personally pleasing to you go for it. My personal opinion is go original color (or any other available color from the 71 paint chart for that car) base and clear coat and leave off the vinyl top and stipe. Use the time and money you save to do the interior or improve some other aspect of the car. My opinion only, your car your call. BTW: what you see on my avatar is my 69 swinger in R4 which was labeled Swinger Red in the 69 sales brochure but I think its really 68 Charger Red (a good deal of orange involved). I got a 69 paint chip chart off ebay for cheap and had my local NAPA cross reference the numbers. Martin Senour paint, base coat and 3 coats of clear. Painted in a garage.

Looks nice 69.. I like traditional too but Im trying to get my wife involved in this one as much as possible so i let her pick the color somewhat. I told her it had to be red and she went from there!!! LOL I gave her a bunch of magazines to look through to get an idea about what color she liked.

Take a trip to your nearest Lexus dealer and take a look at a LS600H in Noble Spinel Mica. It is (to me) the most beautiful red pearl that I have ever seen.
I have a picture of one in my computer at work. I will try to post it tomorrow.

The newer colors are more user friendly.
and look as well as the old candy's.8)

Take her to a new car lot and get her ok.:thumbrig:
Good idea yellowdartdave,
Hope you can get a camera to get a good pic.:salute:

Yeah right now im at work and when i get home im taking some more pics to post on here. I havent even started good yet on the body, but ill have three weeks to get going when i get in. I should be able to knock alot of the paint and body work out. Hopefully all the interior and engine bay. most of the body work.
