Good old fashioned alkyd enamel with a natural bristled brush

My buddy painted his boat with a roller. It looked like it was sprayed. He bought Interlux flow additive to put in the paint. He said it went on looking rough but after a few minutes it flows out. No idea if stuff like that is available for auto paint. Maybe hot weather reducer or this?

The reason I asked why was I have painted many wheels by putting the rear up on jack stands and bolting a wheel on the axle, starting the engine and put the car in reverse, the wheel spins and I spray can lightly till all covered.
