That big felt washer, does it go between the oil shield / slinger disk and the timing cover? The slinger turns against it when the engine is running?

The felt washer installs between the balancer and timing cover.

With today's timing cover seals, it isn't needed. It just rubs the crap out of the timing cover and does no good. Pitch it.

I'm curious about MoparLeo where he says:

"Older engines used to have a large, felt washer installed there."

Installing new timing chain on a 318, questioning the oil slinger

Not sure what he means by "there".

I should have paid more attention when I took my balancer / timing cover off, but I thought the felt washer and slinger disk came off at the same time. I don't recall pulling the felt pad out of the balancer back side, but I'm real hazy about that.

Is there some mopar document / diagram / manual page *anywhere* that actually shows / describes this felt pad? The one that I had in there looks more like jute than felt (the new one that came with the felpro timing gasket kit is definately felt). I won't use if it's supposed to go on the backside of the balancer.

Donut goes on back side of balancer if using it. The slinger(if u use it) goes inside the timing cover to sling oil on chain.
Donut and slinger are 2 different locations.

We've already told you where it goes. You have several people telling you where it goes. If you weren't going to believe us, then why on Earth did you ask. I tell you what do. Put it where you had it and see how THAT works out. MoparLeo was talking about the METAL oil slinger which goes BEHIND the timing cover. YOU are talking about the felt washer. That goes between the balancer and timing cover RIGHT where several of us have told you.

I see what you are saying........Seems a bit confusing. I realize that you are not questioning the advice given here in this thread. Pull it apart and fix it

I think what Rusty is politely trying to say is that he doesn't have an answer to your question "Is there some mopar document / diagram / manual page *anywhere* that actually shows / describes this felt pad?".
