power steering gear box

Hello,
Anybody know how to check to see if a power steering gearbox is any good? Or has anyone had one these apart before, is it a pain? Are there rebuild kits available?

When you have someone in the car move the steering wheel the shaft going into the box should have no more then a 1/4 inch of movement before the tire try to move.

You should be able to take the input ,the one the steering col. goes too and when you turn it the steering geer that the pitman arm hooks to should turn all most instantly. maybe a 1/4 " of play max.
