So i was parked outside of 7-11 last night talking to my buddy with the dart running when outta nowhere there is this loud pop and white smoke starts bellowing out from under the hood! I have a power steering pump that has a leak in it so it was bone dry and i assumed that was the problem, so i took the key out and popped the hood to check her out, it looked fine except for the rest of the white smoke. ok after a while i started the car and it ran great all the way home, pulled in the driveway parked it and pulled out the key only it wont turn off! its puttering one maybe two cylinders really slowly. I pulled the batt cable but still wouldn't turn off, it finally gave up and stopped running. I know that a bad timing issues can cause this to happen but any thoughts or sugestions?

My best guess...
The pop was a water hose rupturing. One the drive home it to ran too hot , thus the detonation .

wow your very smart. close but not quite i looked at it today, how could i explain this hmmmm. the top part of my radiator blew apart! the smoke was steam, the pop was the radiator and the cause was what maybe low on coolant or more likely a bad water pump. how can i tell if the water pump is bad?

Also check the thermstat. If it's stuck closed it will cause the overheating. To check the pump you can remove the thermostat and start the engine. I assume that you have repaired or replaced the radiator. With the thermostat out the water will flow freely and will be noticable when you start the engine.

The "old school" way of checking the water pump is to grab the fan by both sides(engine OFF of coarse) and see if it has excessive wiggle side to side...

Water pump probably was ok but may not live long since it was run without water. If it were leaking previously the radiater wouldn't have popped (pressure relieved at the bad pump). So basicly, radiater, thermostat, and a radiater cap.
Then plan on a water pump.

I'd check my compression after an incident like that too, if it detonated that badly you could also have damaged the pistons, rings or walls...

I've actually seen pistons in a ford get so hot they stuck in the bores due to the expansion. Not a good thing!

I've seen that in most every engine. Far too hot then once its turned off or stops it wont turn over again.
If it does turn /run now, change the oil !

sound advice! thank you all very much youve been a great help, in a few day ill post results
