I see many '65 and later neutral safety switch posts but I need info pre-'65. My '64 Valiant push button select neutral safety switch has a crack next to the stud in the epoxy that leaks fluid when the torque converter drains out a week after shut down. Part number 1704100 is on the side. I have removed the switch and temporarily capped it with a 3/4-16 bolt - no leaks. It looks like the 1704 283 is similar but several posts state this part is not compatible with pre-'65 push button trannys. Has anyone used the 1704 283 switch successfully on the '64 push button tranny? These 283 parts are quite pricey and I don't want to fork out the cash for a part that won't work. Thanks in advance.

Sorry I don't know the answer about compatibility but if your old switch still works you might try cleaning it real good with carb cleaner and applying epoxy sealer to seal up the crack. Just a thought

Fishy68, yes, thanks for the tip. I did have a back up plan for that. However I did find the 1704 283 part and will see if it functions. It might not hold the fluids, but if it works as a switch I will know that the 1704100 and 1704 283 parts are the same. Once I know that I will then consider the epoxy on the 100 or the money for the 283 options. Stay tuned. I can't believe there aren't more pre-'65 switches out there failing.

Success. For the record despite what was stated on two different websites that the 1704 283 part is not compatible with pre '65 904 trans with push button select. The 1704283 appears to be the same as the 1704100. I have installed it on a '64 904 and it is working. I can finally stop buying trans fluid by the gallon as I now have a leak free transmission.

I assume you meant "is compatible" since you said it works. Glad to hear you got it fixed
