Hi, new guy here, I've been researching for a while, but I can't determine if a 65 cable shift 904 will work in my 64 v8 Valiant with push buttons. My current trans is shifting just fine, no slippage, just getting noisy and I'd like a spare.

The only thing you'll need to do to use the '65 trans is swap the rooster comb/cable receiver and the NSS. The cable ends are different between PB and console/column applications, and the switch needs to match the slightly different rooster comb. Or you could just install the whole '64 valve body.
I just noticed the picture of the rooster combs won't help you a bit. From left to right they're '64 and back PB style, '66-'70, and '71-up. It doesn't show the difference between the older pushbutton and '65 column/console units. My bad.

You also need to swap the manual valve in the valve body.
