I saw this today. Not sure if this belongs to a member here: http://decatur.craigslist.org/cto/5385585787.html

My question has to do with something in the last paragraph:
Car will not come with a title or VIN number, but would be a very fun pro street car if an existing VIN would be transferred to it (this is not difficult to do, I have done it before feel free to ask about it).

Is this even legal? Seems really shady to me.

Absolutely not legal.

Does he have vin plates for sale also? :D

The legal way to use it on the street would be to apply for a state issued VIN number. It would have to be inspected by a LEO, usually a state cop as part of that process.

Consult with your local DMV / BMV before spending any money for sure.

As stated, the only fully correct/legal way to do this would be an assembled title. Eric L

I know of a few guys that have no guilt over swapping VINs in vehicles. They seem to think that if they aren't cloning a rare or valueable car, what is the harm?
I call bullshit on that. A number swap is a Federal Offense even on slant six cars.

I'm not sure Illinois would pursue a problem on something this old. If the VIN or actual car were stolen that would be one thing, if a person could prove it was theirs. For a state that is 78 billion in the hole, I think title it and get the plate fees as fast as possible would be the goal. After all the state has a lot of stuff they need to blow money on.

Just remember, that it 'can and does happen.' That is the entire reason cars have VINs in the first place. The owner of this Cuda HAD an original unrestored original owner (himself) Cuda. What he got back was a stripped bare body shell and a "box of parts." The alleged buyer alleges that he allegedly bought the car with an alleged bill of sale. Allegedly.

The fact that it's a body shell, or a drag body, doesn't mean that somewhere, some time ago, someone lost money on what was their car.

This, I mean:

Yup, state assigned VIN# is the best you can hope for and then there is no guarantee. Most states require the vehicle to be "road worthy" before the inspection is even conducted.

As a prior state inspector I have seen people pour tons of $'s into cars and never obtain a VIN and or registration.

Buyer beware!
