I am updating my video system and need a streaming device. My vendor recommends either an apple-tv or a roku device. We stream Netflix and Amazon prime only. I appreciate any experienced feedback you folks could give me.

I have a smart tv in my living room. In my bedroom I have a Firestick. Has your Netflix and of course Amazon. And you can add more apps if you like.

based on my experiences with apple products, i would choose what ever the other option is
(it can be a washing machine, it would still beat the apple)

I have both apple TV and roku.

I hate the remote that the apple TV has and I realy like the Roku remote

I use a Sony smart TV with KODI loaded on it with NOLIMITS build on KODI. Any android based tv box would do the same. Firesticks don't have enough memory space but there are "lite" versions of most KODI builds for those lesser devices.
We do subscribe/pay for Netflix so wife can watch on her phone.

You really can't beat the Roku for cost and simplicity.
Note that the different models come with different cables.
If your TV has HDMI inputs, then this one is good.

If you only have the three RCA plug type on your TV then you want the Roku Express Plus.

Keep in mind that the stick is nice as well, but your remote needs to be able to see it.
Sometimes it can get blocked behind a TV.
AND your TV has to have a USB port for it.

We use a Chrome cast got it at Target $39
It casts anything you can bring up on your phone or computer on to your TV, we have a 60 inch Samsung.
Requires that you have fast internet and a wireless router to setup a WiFi network.
Simple, works great, no separate remote, already got a draw full of remotes.
Good luck it's easy.

I’ve bern using the amazon fire stick. Use it for Netflix , Hulu, amazon movies and my IPTV. It’s been great. Was worried at first because they say the processor in it’s slow but it’s worked great on the two tv’s I use it on.

I had the chromecast and it worked but I changed yo the fire stick and like it a lot more. I also had a roku box and wasn’t s fan of that either. Both the chromecast and roku box are just laying around now.

The new smart tv’s seem to work well too.

Best thing about smart TV is doing everything with a single remote. The Sony blue ray player included remote that has never had batteries installed.
High speed cable internet isn't available here so best we can get is ATT uverse. It does wifi and everything else including this laptop is on wifi but ATT tech guy said video streams much better in a wire, and all modems give priority to the cables. So the modem sits beneath the wall mounted TV with ethernet cable from modem to TV. The only thing that lags my video is the house phone. It uses the same uverse modem which must give the highest priority to that wire.

For what it's worth, xbox, if not into games or no children probably too much.
The xbox remote, sold separately, works everything, first remote I found that ever did.

yep KODI was originally XBMC xbox media center, just rewritten to run on most systems.
